Reaching Home supports REACH in Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador
REACH, the Regional Action Committee on Housing, based in Clarenville, NL, started as a small, grassroots community organization. Thanks to incredible community organizers who strongly believed in addressing housing insecurity in our area, REACH started as an organization concerned with addressing housing needs in Clarenville through a small emergency shelter and a housing support worker.
Since then, REACH has blossomed into a thriving organization—addressing the unique challenges that come with rural homelessness and housing insecurities. Because of REACH’s initial Reaching Home funding, REACH was able to hire a second staff person and expand services. This continued funding allowed REACH to rent and renovate what is now known as the REACH Hub—a drop-in centre in our community that houses a community kitchen called Kelsey’s Closet, laundry facilities and a safe space for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness to find a safe and welcoming space. Services like our weekly free meal, housing start-up kits, Wellness Wednesday programming, and other forms of client support have all been powered by our Reaching Home funding, and the dreams of our amazing team, especially long-term Housing Support Worker, Dominique Soper.
Reaching Home provides funding to communities like Grand Falls-Windsor through the Rural and Remote Homelessness<https://housing-infrastructure.canada.ca/homelessness-sans-abri/funding-financement-eng.html#rrh> (RRH) funding stream. The RRH funding stream is designed to support projects that help prevent and reduce homelessness in non-Designated Communities, which includes any community outside of the Designated Communities, Indigenous Homelessness or Territorial Homelessness streams. Reaching Home’s community-based approach allows a Community Entity, like the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor<https://grandfallswindsor.com/business/economic-development/> for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, to partner with organizations and support homelessness priorities.
Receiving Reaching Home funding has allowed REACH to serve 100 regular clients over the past number of years. Each of these rural clients is facing unique challenges surrounding housing insecurity and homelessness. Because of this funding, we have expanded our community profile, grown our shelter and our staff—and are moving towards self-sufficiency in funding. While rural homelessness may often be a hidden issue, at REACH, we are aware of how deeply impacting this issue is for folks in our rural communities. Thanks to Reaching Home, REACH is able to uniquely serve this often overlooked population in ways that fit its context perfectly—and continue to work towards REACH’s goal of ending homelessness in their area, one person at a time.

The Awards
Canada’s Volunteer Awards (CVA) is a federal recognition program that acknowledges the importance of volunteering. Operating under Employment and Social Development Canada, the Awards are about inspiring Canadians from all walks of life to find new ways of making a difference in their communities.
Twenty-one awards will be presented (1 national award and 20 regional awards in 4 categories in 5 regions). Recipients will have the opportunity to select a non-profit organization that will receive a grant.
CVA Recipient Spotlight:
AVENS — A community for Seniors
The AVENS Volunteer Board of Directors (the Board) has been instrumental in addressing the urgent need for affordable housing for seniors in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Recipients of a 2025 Canada’s Volunteer Awards Special Mention in the Social Innovator category for the British Columbia and the North region, they launched the AVENS Pavillion project, creating housing designed specifically for seniors. The Board was committed to ensuring that the elderly live with dignity and respect in safe, supportive environments, in communities where they can thrive socially, emotionally, and physically.
The Running on Faith Project
The mission of The Running on Faith Project—the recipient of the Canada’s Volunteer Awards’ 2024 Social Innovation award for British Columbia and the North—is to transform the lives of individuals in temporary housing and recovery centres in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Founded in 2022 by Andie van der Eerden, the Project is comprised of walking and learn-to-run programs. The walking and running programs offer more than exercise: they offer a consistent presence, ongoing encouragement, and social connection for the participants.
Andie also recruited volunteers to help direct the groups and to help extend the reach of the Project. At the same time, she worked to create community involvement and awareness of the issues faced by individuals living in temporary housing and recovery centres.
Participants reported increased self-esteem, improved mental health, and a renewed sense of purpose. By addressing both physical and emotional needs, the Project helps individuals to start to think about rebuilding their lives with confidence and dignity.

The review panel is especially interested in hearing from people directly affected by this issue, service providers, and experts in housing, human rights, and accessibility.
By providing a submission, you or your organization will have the opportunity to share your experiences, expertise, and proposed solutions. Your contributions will help inform the review panel’s report and recommendations to the federal minister responsible for housing. The panel aims to create a safe and welcoming space where people can share their stories and work together toward meaningful solutions. Registration is Now Open for the 2026 National Conference on Ending Homelessness
The National Conference on Ending Homelessness<https://conference.caeh.ca/event/90f36943-1023-47cf-9b37-738bb3e5e7a9/home> (CAEH26), hosted by the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness<https://caeh.ca/> (CAEH), will take place in Winnipeg, Manitoba from November 3 to 5, 2026. The National Conference on Ending Homelessness brings together the Canadian movement to end homelessness to learn from each other, connect and accelerate our work in communities from coast to coast.
CAEH26 is an opportunity for communities, organizations, front-line workers, advocates, leaders and people with lived experience to learn from one another, take inspiration, and take away actionable information to improve their work to end homelessness in their communities.
Registration is currently open and available at a discounted rate until August 17, 2026.

Vers un chez-soi soutient l’association REACH à Clarenville, à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador
REACH, un comité d’action régional sur le logement, basé à Clarenville, à T.-N.-L., a vu le jour sous la forme d’une petite association communautaire locale. Grâce à d’incroyables organisateurs communautaires qui croyaient fermement en la nécessité de lutter contre la précarité du logement dans notre région, REACH a commencé ses activités en tant qu’organisation visant à répondre aux besoins en matière de logement à Clarenville, et ce, par le biais d’un petit refuge d’urgence et d’un travailleur de soutien en matière de logement.
Depuis lors, REACH s’est développée pour devenir une organisation florissante, qui s’attaque aux défis particuliers liés à l’itinérance rurale et à la précarité du logement. Grâce au financement initial accordé par le programme Vers un chez-soi, REACH a pu embaucher un deuxième employé et accroître ses services. Ce financement continu a permis à REACH de louer et de rénover ce qui est aujourd’hui connu sous le nom de REACH Hub : une halte-accueil au sein de notre communauté équipée d’une cuisine communautaire « Kelsey’s Closet », une buanderie et un espace sûr où les personnes en situation d’itinérance ou à risque de le devenir peuvent trouver un endroit sûr et accueillant. Des services tels que nos repas hebdomadaires gratuits, les trousses de départ pour le logement, le programme « Wellness Wednesday » et d’autres mesures de soutien aux clients ont tous été rendus possibles grâce au financement de Vers un chez-soi et aux aspirations de notre formidable équipe, en particulier celles de Dominique Soper, notre travailleur de soutien en matière de logement à long terme.
Vers un chez-soi octroie des fonds à des communautés comme Grand Falls-Windsor par l’entremise du volet de financement Itinérance dans les communautés rurales et éloignées<https://logement-infrastructure.canada.ca/homelessness-sans-abri/funding-financement-fra.html#icre> (ICRÉ). Ce volet de financement est destiné à soutenir des projets visant à prévenir et à réduire l’itinérance dans les Communautés non désignées, c’est-à-dire toutes celles qui ne relèvent pas des volets Communautés désignées, Itinérance chez les Autochtones ou Itinérance dans les territoires. L’approche communautaire de Vers un chez-soi permet à une Entité communautaire, comme la ville de Grand Falls-Windsor<https://grandfallswindsor.com/business/economic-development/> (en anglais seulement) de la province de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, de s’associer à des organisations et de soutenir les priorités en matière d’itinérance.
Ces dernières années, REACH a pu desservir 100 clients réguliers grâce au financement de Vers un chez-soi. Chacun de ces clients vit en milieu rural et est confronté à des difficultés particulières liées à la précarité du logement et à l’itinérance. Grâce à ce financement, nous avons augmenté notre visibilité au sein de la communauté, agrandi notre refuge et renforcé notre personnel — tout en progressant vers l’autonomie financière. Si l’itinérance en milieu rural est souvent un problème méconnu, chez REACH, nous sommes conscients de l’impact profond qu’elle exerce sur les habitants de nos communautés rurales. Avec l’appui de Vers un chez-soi, REACH est  en mesure d’aider de manière unique cette population trop souvent négligée, en adoptant des approches adaptées à son contexte, tout en poursuivant ses efforts pour atteindre notre objectif : mettre fin à l’itinérance dans sa région, une personne à la fois.

À propos des Prix
Les Prix pour le bénévolat du Canada (PBC) sont un programme de reconnaissance fédéral qui souligne l’importance du bénévolat. Administrés par Emploi et Développement social Canada (EDSC), ces prix visent à inspirer les Canadiens de tous les horizons à trouver de nouvelles façons de faire une différence dans leur communauté.
Vingt-et-un prix seront décernés : un prix national et vingt prix régionaux, répartis dans quatre catégories et cinq régions. Les récipiendaires auront la possibilité de choisir un organisme sans but lucratif qui recevra une subvention.

AVENS — Une communauté pour les aînés
Le Conseil d’administration bénévole d’AVENS (le Conseil) a joué un rôle clé dans la réponse aux besoins urgents en matière de logements abordables destinés aux aînés à Yellowknife, dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest. Récipiendaire d’une mention spéciale des Prix pour le bénévolat du Canada 2025 dans la catégorie « Innovation sociale » pour la région de la Colombie-Britannique et du Nord, le Conseil a lancé le projet Pavillon AVENS, qui vise à créer des logements conçus spécialement pour les aînés. Le Conseil d’administration s’est engagé à faire en sorte que les aînés vivent dans la dignité et le respect dans des milieux sécuritaires et favorables, dans des communautés où ils peuvent s’épanouir sur les plans social, émotionnel et physique.
Le projet « Running on Faith »
Le projet « Running on Faith  », qui a reçu les Prix pour le bénévolat du Canada 2024 pour l’« Innovation sociale » en Colombie-Britannique et dans le Nord, a pour mission de transformer la vie des personnes vivant dans des logements temporaires et des centres de rétablissement dans les basses-terres continentales de la Colombie-Britannique. Fondé en 2022 par Andie van der Eerden, le projet comprend des programmes de marche et d’initiation à la course. Les programmes de marche et de course offrent plus que de l’exercice : ils offrent une présence constante, un encouragement continu et un lien social pour les participants.
Andie a également mobilisé des bénévoles pour aider à orienter les groupes et élargir la portée du projet. En même temps, elle a travaillé à créer une implication communautaire et une sensibilisation aux problèmes rencontrés par les personnes vivant dans des logements temporaires et dans des centres de rétablissement.
Les participants ont fait état d’une meilleure estime de soi, d’une meilleure santé mentale et d’un regain de motivation et de sens à leur vie. En répondant à la fois aux besoins physiques et émotionnels, le projet aide les participants à envisager la reconstruction de leur vie avec confiance et dignité.

Une intervention éprouvée pour prévenir et mettre fin à l’itinérance chez les jeunes Noirs
Découvrez un modèle éprouvé pour prévenir et mettre fin au l’itinérance chez les jeunes Noirs.
Dans son plus récent rapport « Prevention Matters<https://preventhomelessness.ca/prevention-matters/>!<https://preventhomelessness.ca/prevention-matters/> » (en anglais seulement), l’Observatoire canadien sur l’itinérance s’est penché sur le programme « Bridge of Hope<https://preventhomelessness.ca/> » (en anglais seulement), un modèle d’intervention éprouvé en matière de logement qui vise à prévenir et à mettre fin à l’itinérance chez les jeunes Noirs dans les régions de Toronto et de Peel. Les intervenants ont examiné pourquoi cette intervention est à la fois essentielle et efficace, les mesures pratiques que d’autres communautés peuvent prendre pour commencer à mettre en œuvre et à étendre ce modèle dans leurs propres contextes, ainsi que les changements nécessaires à l’échelle des systèmes et des politiques.

La Conférence nationale pour mettre fin à l’itinérance<https://conference.caeh.ca/event/90f36943-1023-47cf-9b37-738bb3e5e7a9/home> (ACMFI26), organisée par l’Alliance canadienne pour mettre fin à l’itinérance<https://fr.caeh.ca/> (ACMFI), aura lieu à Winnipeg, du 3 au 5 novembre 2026. La Conférence nationale pour mettre fin à l’itinérance rassemble les membres du mouvement canadien pour mettre fin à l’itinérance afin qu’ils puissent apprendre les uns des autres, qu’ils établissent des liens et qu’ils accélèrent notre travail dans les communautés d’un océan à l’autre.
L’ACMFI26 est une occasion pour les communautés, les organismes, les travailleurs de première ligne, les défenseurs des droits des personnes, les leaders et les personnes ayant vécu une situation d’itinérance d’apprendre les uns des autres, de s’inspirer et d’emporter de l’information concrète pour améliorer leur travail visant à mettre fin à l’itinérance dans leurs communautés.
La période d’inscription est actuellement ouverte et offerte à un tarif réduit jusqu’au 17 août 2026.
