To support the Ban Terminator Campaign, the Ecology Action Centre?s Food
Action Committee will be hosting a talk by Dr. Av Singh and screening the
Canadian film Seeds of Change. Told from the perspectives of Canadian farmers,
this film explores the controversy surrounding genetically modified (GM) crops
and how it has changed the face of agriculture in western Canada.
Genetic Use Restriction Technology (GURT), also commonly referred to as
Terminator Technology and Suicide Seeds, produces plants which have been
genetically modified to yield sterile seeds at harvest. Although 188 countries
(Canada included) have signed the UN Convention of Biological Diversity?s de
facto moratorium on their use, several large biotechnology companies currently
own Terminator patents and are currently developing this technology. The
Canadian government, although it has ratified the moratorium, continues to
undermine the ban and to lobby in support of seed companies? interests.
This technology is economically and socially unsustainable and has potentially
disastrous implications for sustaining biodiversity, indigenous knowledge
systems, small-scale farmers and global food security.
Please come out to learn more about GM seeds and the Ban Terminator Campaign.
If you are unable to make attend, but still want to take action, please go to
www.banterminator.org to find out how you can support the international ban.
