Lara Bradley writes a column for "The Sudbury Star" called "The 
Conscious Consumer."

In today's column she comments on CBC reporter Wendy Mesley's recent TV
segment on cancer. Much of the available literature comments on personal
lifestyle choices, such as not smoking, eating vegetables, getting 
exercise and imbibing modest amounts of alcohol.

What about environmental factors and the chemicals we use and are 
exposed to in our daily lives?

According to Bradley,

- The average person uses 10 personal care products daily, which works 
out to 126 unique chemicals being applied to their skin and going down 
the drain.

- Many leading perfumes, nail polishes and other cosmetic products sold 
in Canada contain the endocrine-disrupting phthalates DBP and DEHP, both 
of which have been banned for use in cosmetic products in European Union
countries.
