Modernizing the Fisheries Act: A Briefing

Come out to learn about the modernizing of Canada's Fisheries Act. This
138-year old piece of legislation is being amended. Hear various
perspectives on the amendments from a representative of the Department of
Fisheries and Oceans and representatives of local environmental
non-governmental organizations. The briefing is organized by the Pro Bono
Students Canada-Dalhousie Law School and the Nova Scotia Environmental

AFFLUENZA: AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES - talk by Peter Dagleish Feb. 21 & 22
On February 21st and 22nd, Armbrae Academy will join with the University of
Kings College in hosting the inaugural Armbrae Dialogue at Kings - a social
justice symposium for local high school students, featuring a keynote speech
by internationally acclaimed Canadian anti-poverty advocate Peter Dalglish.
Mr. Dalglish is a leading authority on working children, street children!
and children affected by war. He is the Founder of Street Kids
International, a global leader in designing creative self-help projects for
poor, urban children, and has also been affiliated with the United Nations,
Youth Service Canada, Children at Risk, Ashoka Canada and Dream Now. 
The keynote address, Affluenza: An Embarrassment of Riches, will be
presented on Wednesday, February 21 in Dalhousie University's Ondaatje Hall,
McCain Arts and Social Science Building, 6135 University Avenue, at 7:00 pm.
The evening will feature a talk by Mr. Daglish followed by a conversation
with Tom Walsh from the Coady International Institute at St. Francis Xavier
University. The event is open to the public, a free will donation is
suggested, and early arrival is encouraged due to limited seating.

A public workshop examining a free trade concept, spanning the New England
States and Atlantic Provinces, which threatens to severely undermine labor
rights and environmental standards in the region. Already, its proponents
include many of Atlantic Canada's business elite, corporate monopolies,
provincial politicians, and free market fundamentalist think-tanks. 
The question is: why hasn't the public been consulted?

 "Landmine Action: Ethiopia and Beyond" Talk on Tuesday, February 27

This event is part of the Canadian Landmine Awareness Week. Phil Duguay is
an alumnus of Dalhousie University (BA, History 2005). For the last six
months, he has served as a Mines Action Canada Mine Action Capacity Building
Officer in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Phil has worked hands on with landmine
survivors, facilitating service programs, conducting research on mine use
and disability legislation in East Africa, and learning about Mine Action in
the Ethiopian context. Phil will speak what is currently being done to
eradicate landmines around the world. Organized by the Society for Corporate
