EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Position: Natural Resource Consultations Coordinator
Organization: Ecology Action Centre http://www.ecologyaction.ca
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) was founded in 1971
and is one of Nova Scotia's most active environmental
organizations. We are seeking a full-time staff person to
coordinate our participation in the upcoming Natural
Resources Strategy consultations led by Voluntary Planning
(addressing forestry, parks, mining and biodiversity). The
Standing Tall: Forests for Life Campaign is a major
initiative of the Ecology Action Centre and has been
speaking out for improvements to forestry practices in Nova
Scotia since 2004. Addressing the forestry component of
these consultations will be the main priority of this
position. A secondary priority will be to ensure that EAC's
responses in the other three topic areas are cohesive. The
Coordinator will work closely with our Wilderness Committee,
with our Public Lands campaign and with volunteers and staff
at the Ecology Action Centre. This position reports to our
Policy Director.
As part of the Standing Tall campaign the successful
candidate will be responsible for:
-- coordinating an alliance of over 40 groups from a
variety of sectors, and a core steering committee consisting
of staff and volunteers from the Ecology Action Centre and
other stakeholder organizations;
-- facilitating agreement on core messages and group
engagement;
-- managing volunteer and contractor involvement, including
regional outreach, policy task groups, web site development,
writing of fact sheets and others;
-- coordinating the development of a comprehensive
presentation to Voluntary Planning;
-- public presentations and media relations;
-- with Sierra Club-Atlantic, coordinating a public
relations and awareness-raising campaign involving web-based
marketing and the leveraging of professional pro-bono
services;
-- ensuring that all communications are technically
accurate and appropriately nuanced for their target
audiences;
-- routine administrative tasks, e.g., maintenance of
contact and email lists, website updates, reports to
funders, etc.;
-- other duties as required.
Under the overall coordination of EAC's response the
successful candidate will be responsible for:
-- convening EAC-wide strategy sessions on our submissions
to the Voluntary Planning process;
-- developing and implementing mechanisms to ensure that
EAC projects have a mutual understanding of their
submissions to the process;
-- connecting with outside stakeholders;
-- participating in, and supporting, the overall work of
the Ecology Action Centre.
The successful applicant will demonstrate:
-- a track record in consensus building, teamwork, and
engagement of volunteers;
-- a knowledge of forests and forestry in Nova Scotia;
-- superior communications skills;
-- an understanding of policy development processes;
-- ability to effectively represent the Centre's interests
in a wide variety of venues;
-- flexibility; and
-- creativity.
The ideal candidate will also have academic qualifications
in forestry, ecology, biology, environmental planning,
public administration, or similar disciplines.
