MEDIA ALERT / PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

Canoeists, Paddlers, Hikers and More:

Haligonians Hear Their Call From The Big Wild!

WHO: Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), Mountain Equipment Co-op
(MEC)

WHEN: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 12 PM to 3 PM

WHERE: The Big Wild Parade Circuit will kick-off at the MEC Halifax Store
(1550 Granville Street) at 12 PM, make its way from Barrington and Blowers
to Grand Parade and then up the Citadel Hill to the public library at Spring
Garden. Once at Spring Garden, the team will be setting-up camp and engaging
the public about The Big Wild over a cup of fresh, hot coffee.

WHAT / WHY: A new initiative called The Big Wild founded by CPAWS and MEC
will catch city dwellers across Canada off-guard with live pop-up wilderness
scenes imbedded into our cityscapes. A spectacle of kayaking, canoeing,
hiking and paddle toting wilderness lovers will be inviting passersby to add
their voice to The Big Wild, a rising social movement that enables everyone
who cares about Canada's wilderness to voice their support for protecting
it. The Big Wild's vision is that Canada will protect at least half of our
country's wilderness from industrial development because scientists suggest
that's what's needed for our ecosystems to survive.

Photo Opportunities Include:

 Big Wild Parade Circuit kicking-off at the MEC Halifax Store (1550
Granville Street) at 12 PM

 Big Wild Parade Circuit making their way through the streets of
Halifax from Barrington and Blowers to Grand Parade and then up the Citadel
Hill to the public library at Spring Garden (12 PM to 1 PM)

 Big Wild campsite set-up on the grounds of the public library at
Spring Garden featuring Big Wild spokespeople, an engagement station and
complementary coffee (1 PM to 3 PM)

SMALL VOICES CREATING BIG CHANGE

These initiatives are designed to inspire every Canadian to participate in
this movement - giving as little as two minutes, or as much as two months of
their time. Canadians can:

 Add their voice to The Big Wild online declaration to protect at
least half of Canada's wilderness forever at www.thebigwild.org

 Wear a lace, share a lace: green shoelaces are available from
Mountain Equipment Co-op for a small donation to The Big Wild. Wear one and
spread the word by giving the other lace to a friend

 Share experiences of Canada's great wilderness at
www.thebigwild.org, by creating profiles, uploading stories, photos and
videos of your personal experiences to inspire others

 Take a trip into Canada's wilderness. Join the conservation efforts
and raise funds to support important wilderness campaigns
