EAC Marine Program: Sustainable Fisheries Scientist 

 

The Ecology Action Centre was founded in 1971 and is now one of Nova
Scotia's most active and largest environmental organizations. Our
well-established Marine Program focuses on ecological impacts of fishing,
sustainable seafood and sustainable livelihoods. The Marine Program works
with local communities to promote local seafood and sustainable fisheries,
advocates for government policy that promotes conservation in addition to
working collaboratively with several other marine conservation organizations
in Canada and internationally. The position is based in our recently
renovated green building in the North End of Halifax. 

 

The Sustainable Fisheries Scientist will work with the Marine Conservation
Coordinator as well as other marine program staff and the Marine Issues
Committee to further marine conservation in Atlantic Canada and beyond. We
are seeking someone with a background in marine and fisheries science to
provide scientific support for this program and to take primary
responsibility for a project focusing on large pelagic fisheries and species
in Atlantic Canada.

General Responsibilities

*        Lead strategic project to improve management and reduce bycatch in
an Atlantic Canadian fishery

*        Data synthesis and analysis

*        Provision of science advice to marine program projects

*        Developing science based strategies for marine conservation 

*        Representing the organization at science and management meetings

*        Advising on sustainability assessments for seafood

 

Experience

*        Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles and methods
used in fisheries science 

*        Data analysis

*        Ability and willingness to translate scientific results into
information that can be understood by the general public 

*        Ability and interest in conservation advocacy and non-profit
organizations

 

Skills

*        Excellent communication

*        Experience with statistical analysis (SAS and R an asset)

*        Scientific writing 

*        Ability to take initiative on an individual basis as well as work
collaboratively

 

Additional but not required

*        Experience in marine conservation and Atlantic Canadian fisheries
in particular

*        Experience working with resource users of Atlantic Canadian
fisheries

*        Grantwriting 

*        Project management

*        Experience working in the non-profit sector

 

Start Date: November 24, 2008

 

Hours and Wage: 37.5 hrs per week at $18.50/hr

Position Length: 8 months with potential for extension

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
