Seeking
Schools to Participate in “Making Tracks”
Active
Transportation Safety Education Pilot
The Active & Safe
Routes to School program of the Ecology Action Centre is seeking elementary,
junior high and high schools to participate in an exciting Active
Transportation Safety Education pilot program during the fall and early winter of
2008.
The “Making Tracks” pilot
will provide experiential skill training in the areas of pedestrian, cycling,
skateboarding, and in-line skating safety. Participants will develop contextual
and hands-on skills that will allow them to walk and wheel in their communities
with increased confidence and safety. The pilot project follows a
“train-the-trainer” approach by training older youth (ages 13 to 18) and/or school
staff the skills to teach younger children and youth using multiple sessions
(for example, through weekly in-class sessions).
This pilot provides skill
training for older youth involved in leadership training as well as activities
to deliver directly during Physical Education classes or after school programs. Schools may choose to pilot
one or more of the safety skills (pedestrian, cycling, skateboarding, or in-line
skating).
To
apply, or for more information, please send a
brief letter of interest to Cheyenne Dickinson at walk at ecologyaction.ca, or call (902)
442-5055.
ASRTS would like to thank Transport
Canada, the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and
Infrastructure Renewal, and the Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and
Protection for their support of this project.
