INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Position: Organic Farming Internships/Apprenticeships

Organization: Horse and Garden

Location: West Hants County, near Windsor, Nova Scotia

Farm Description

Horse and Garden specializes in organic vegetable, fruit and

hay production for local clients, the local Farmers Market

and some wholesale sales. The farm is in transition for

Organic Certification and currently follows organic practices.

A 75 acre riverfront farm about 45 minutes from Halifax,

there are currently two 1/4 acre plots devoted to market

garden and sweet potatoes. During 2008, a 9-acre dike field

was land-formed and prepared and will host squash and hay

this year. Also in 2008, a field of raised beds was prepared

for a raspberry u-pick; canes are to be planted and trellised

this spring with commercial production anticipated in 2010.

Positions

Horse and Garden has openings for 3 interns in 2009. Some

work experience together with a desire and ability to work

hard --and see results-- are the main requisites. Carpentry

skills would be highly welcomed. Individuals contemplating

starting their own organic operation may especially benefit

as this is only year two for the farm -- after many decades

laying fallow---and the farm is very much a work in progress!

Individuals will generally work 5 or 5 1/2 day weeks,

8am-4pm, and sometimes later on Friday for market

preparation. Apprentices will alternate Saturday morning

Market participation.

Ideally apprentices will come to the farm for the entire

season April-Nov; however interested individuals available

for a minimum three month period should apply and will be

considered.

As of this posting (April 22 2009) we are still looking for

one apprentice. If interested, please email for current status.

Learning Opportunities

On the farm there are currently two 40' x 5' compost

windrows which must be turned and managed, added to and

eventually spread. New planting beds are to be created,

several new areas to be plowed and planted in green manures,

horses to tend and ride (riding for experienced individuals

only), succession planting, and raised beds to be created.

Additionally there is fencing, bush hogging, manure

spreading, hay making, seeding and transplanting, weeding,

cultivating, harvesting, and helping to run the booth at the

Windsor Farmer's Market.

Along with the practical education these activities provide,

there is an extensive library of books and journals on

organic agriculture and always fun and interesting

opportunities to visit and/or attend "work parties" and

social parties on other area organic farms.

Demonstrations regarding general farm activities will be

offered and individuals will be provided with instruction

on specific tasks.

Horse and Garden has the extra benefit of having an

experienced organic "mentor" who is helping with the farm's

overall development. Sessions with the farm mentor will be

scheduled so that each intern has the opportunity to

participate in some sessions to ask questions and develop

planning skills.

Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation is available in the farm's 2nd residence which

is a comfortable three bedroom mini-home consisting of eat-in

kitchen, living room, sunroom, large mudroom, bathroom, three

bedrooms and two large decks, with a bar-b-q. Swimming hole

close by.

Lunch will be provided in the main farm house and apprentices

will be responsible for preparing breakfast and supper in their

own residence with groceries provided.

Horse and Garden welcomes apprentices for the 2009 season

and looks forward to hard work, cooperation, great food and

good fun at the end of the day!

Bring your guitar, your poetry, and your favourite stories.

Entertainment in the form of music festivals, theatre,

performance available close by..... And often around the

kitchen table or bonfire!
