Goods Miles Project Coordinator

 

The Ecology Action Centre is seeking a full-time project coordinator for a new project in the TRAX portfolio - the Goods Miles[1] Project. The primary purpose of the Goods Miles Project is to increase public awareness about the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the transportation of the goods we buy. In addition, the project will encourage people to purchase locally manufactured goods rather than imported products when there is a good quality, competitively priced option available. 

 

The Goods Miles Project Coordinator will be responsible for all aspects of project delivery and administration. There are four main objectives of the project:   

1.    Creating case studies of five to ten common consumer goods and comparing the goods miles and respective carbon footprint of both the locally produced and the imported version of each good. 

2.    Increasing public awareness of the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the transportation of the goods that we buy and encouraging people, when viable options exist, to purchase locally manufactured goods in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

3.    Sharing the project findings with, and obtaining project feedback from, appropriate government departments and/or business associations.

4.    Evaluating the impact of the Goods Miles Project on the attitudes and purchasing behavior of project participants.

The coordinator will report to the Ecology Action Centre's Transportation Issues Committee and work closely with the Ecology Action Centre's TRAX Coordinators.

 

Ongoing Responsibilities

§  Research, writing and case study development

§  Developing and delivering public awareness campaign 

§  Developing and delivering workshops, presentations and communication materials

§  Managing project finances

§  Developing funding proposals

§  Responding to public inquiries and concerns

§  Media outreach and responding to media inquiries

§  Developing and maintaining project website

§  Supporting TRAX volunteers and employees

§  Liaising with TRAX Advisory Committee 

§  Participating in and supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre

 

Skills and Experience

§  Strong interest in and knowledge of sustainable transportation, climate change and economic development

§  Knowledge of the relationship between environmental and economic sustainability 

§  Experience with full cost accounting or life cycle analysis an asset

§  Excellent research and strategic thinking skills

§  Excellent communication skills, including written and presentation

§  Strong facilitation skills, including workshop development 

§  Strong organizational, administrative, project and budget management skills

§  Strong time management skills and an ability to effectively manage multiple tasks

§  Experience working with the media

§  Experience developing funding proposals 

§  Computer literacy in MS Office, including Word, Excel, FrontPage 

§  Creative, determined, diplomatic, optimistic, team-oriented approach

§  Masters in Environmental Studies, Economic Development, Communications or equivalent work experience an asset

§  Familiarity with economic and freight transportation policies an asset

 

Start                September 21, 2009

 

Finish             March 31, 2011. There are two phases of this project: 1. Research, which will extend from Sept. 21, 2009 to Mar. 31, 2010; and 2. Promotion, which will extend from Apr. 1, 2010 to Mar. 31, 2011. Full-time funding (37.5 hours/week) has been secured for the first phase. Part-time funding (8 hours/week) has been secured for the second phase. The successful candidate, in collaboration with the TRAX Coordinators, will be responsible for securing additional funding for the second phase.

 

Wage              $21.04/hour; 37.5 hours/week

Four weeks paid vacation

[1] Goods miles describes the distance a product travels to reach the consumer, and, for the purposes of this project, includes all travel in the life of a good leading up to consumer purchase: from product manufacture (the shipment of raw materials to the factory) to distribution (shipment of the good from the factory to the warehouse) and retail (shipment of the good from the warehouse to the retailer or consumer).
