VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Position: Copenhagen Climate Caravan Atlantic Coordinator
Organization: Sierra Club Canada - Atlantic Canada Chapter

Location: anywhere in Atlantic Canada
Hours: Part-time (~5 hours per week) until end of September
Pay: Potential for an honorarium of ~$500 pending approval
of grant proposals.
Sierra Club Canada is seeking a committed individual to
lead a provincial committee of 3 which will organize the
Atlantic Leg of a national Copenhagen Climate Caravan: a
bike trip aimed at raising awareness about the need for
strong action on climate change at the 2009 UN Climate
Change Conference in Copenhagen this December.
2009 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen is the 15th
Conference of the Parties under the United Nations' Climate
Change Convention. The conference will take place from
December 7th-18th, 2009. At this meeting they will be
discussing Post-Kyoto Targets.
The bike ride will have people cycling relay-style from
each coast and rendezvousing in Ottawa. Participants may
cycle the entire distance or just do provincial stretches.
The Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter is looking for someone to
coordinate a small committee made up of members from all
4 Atlantic Provinces who will plan the trip from Atlantic
Canada (from St. John's, through Nova Scotia and New
Brunswick).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of cycling and environmental groups in your province
- Experience with event planning and promotions
- Experience liaising with media
- Past fundraising experience
- Past experience with organizing cycling trips considered an asset
- Interest in climate change issues
- Love riding bikes! (the coordinator is not obligated to
participate in the ride)
Job Duties:
- Planning the route (Atlantic Provinces to Quebec border)
- Establishing contacts along the route (food and lodging)
- Arranging for documentation of the trip (collecting
stories of participants and people met along the way)
- Fundraising (in-kind and cash)
- Manage regional biking team
- Liaise with national organizing committee
- Website and blog (to communicate the findings and
experiences of the trip)
