ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CAUCUS ON FRI. JAN. 16
Our next Environmental Education (EEC) Caucus meeting will be on Friday,
January 16 in the Hayes Rm. 5th floor, Rowe Management Bldg., Dalhousie

MINING CAUCUS MONTHLY TELECONFERENCE ON TUES. FEB. 3
Our next Mining Caucus teleconference will be on Tuesday, February 3 from
10:00am-11:30am. If you are concerned about how mining is done in the
province, please consider joining our caucus. Caucus Chair: Gretchen

WATER CAUCUS TELECONFERENCE IN FEB. TBA
Our focus is broad and includes all things water – groundwater, surface
water, freshwater, watersheds, and coastal. If you would like to join our

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW & POLICY CAUCUS MEETING ON FEB. 20 
A meeting of the Environmental Law & Policy Caucus will be on Friday,
February 20 from 12:00am-1:30 pm at the Ecology Action Centre, 2705 Fern
Lane in Halifax. Please RSVP for this lunchtime meeting. There will be lunch
provided. Caucus Chair: Emily Pudden, BA, LLB Contact:

law and policy in the province. We will also have a briefing on the Pro Bono
Law projects related to Mining & Sustainability and the Nova Scotia
Environmental Bill of Rights, Environmental Commissioner and Environmental
Review Tribunal. Improvements to Environmental Assessment. *Please let us
know if you would like to teleconference into this meeting.

NSEN ECO-HERO AWARDS: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS – DUE FRIDAY, FEB. 16 
Nominate an individual or group for our Eco-Awards to acknowledge and
appreciate the hard work of environmentalists in our province. The awards
will be given out at our ENGO Roundtable on Friday, February 27 (snow date
is March 2). Nomination forms are attached and more information is available

groups.

Keating Building in Antigonish with lunch provided. Keynote: Julie Stinson,
Community Sustainability Officer for the Town of Antigonish. We will have
other speakers on sustainability in the schools and in the community from
the region

Saturday & Sunday, May 23 & 24, 2009 2nd Annual Sustainability Education
Symposium: Theme: Heath, Recreation and Nature Education. More details to

WORKSHOPS ON NOVA SCOTIA’S SOLID WASTE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT STRATEGY
Invitation to Participate: Stakeholder Workshops on the Renewal of Nova
Scotia’s Solid Waste Resource Management Strategy. We need your knowledge,
ideas and expertise to help Nova Scotia reduce waste to no more than 300
kilograms per person per year. Nova Scotia Environment has prepared the
paper, Thinking Outside the Landfill, to use as a starting point for the

COLLABORATION ON BIODIVERSITY PROJECT – GIVE YOUR INPUT 
As a Party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Canada must
report every four years on implementation of the Convention. Environment
Canada’s Biodiversity Convention Office (EC-BCO) has requested that the
Canadian Environmental Network and its provincial affiliates (including
NSEN) conduct a survey to solicit ENGO views with respect to progress,
challenges, lessons learned and biodiversity priorities in the post 2010
period. A summary of the survey results will be included in the 4th National
CBD Report and will be presented at a multi-stakeholder meeting in Ottawa in
March 2009. For more details and to participate to share your concerns,

(B)	Foundations of Board Governance in Tatamagouche Centre March 19,

(C)	 "Go Green: How to Build An Earth Friendly Community" BOOK CLUB
Saturday, April 4 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Helen Creighton Room,

Community Book Club and Study Circle – Read the book, discuss and take
action! This community book club is a follow up to The Story of Stuff:

(D) The Ecology Action Centre presents: Power Politics - Energy, Policy and

(E) Free public lecture “Current Trends in Aboriginal Law” Speaker: Thomas
Isaac on Tuesday, February 3 from 7:30-9:00 pm, in Room 1016 Dalhousie
University, Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building 6100 University Avenue,
Halifax. Bio: Thomas Isaac, BA, MA, LLB, LLM. Mr. Isaac is a partner at the
law firm of McCarthy Tétrault in Vancouver. He is a nationally recognized
authority in the area of aboriginal law. Mr. Isaac advises clients across
Canada on aboriginal legal matters, and related environmental assessment,
regulatory, and constitutional issues. He is the author of seven books
including Aboriginal Law: Commentary, Cases and Materials and Aboriginal and
Treaty Rights in the Maritimes: The Marshall Decision and Beyond. Organized
by the Nova Scotia Environmental Network and the School for Environmental

(G) Envisioning a Community Garden for Mainland Common – Free public meeting
to create a community garden next to the new Mainland Common Community
centre in Clayton Park. Come to this important meeting on Saturday, February
21 from 2-4pm in Room C, Keshen Goodman Library, 330 Lacewood Drive. Special
guest: Marjorie Willison, CBC Gardening extraordinaire, who will inspire us
