Researcher
Construction and Demolition Options and Outreach Tool Kit
The Ecology Action Centre (EAC), established in 1971, is Nova
Scotia's largest and most active environmental organization. We are
seeking a part-time researcher to work on our Construction &
Demolition Outreach Project which will address diversion of
construction and demolition (C&D) materials from Nova Scotia landfills.
Overview of the Position
The project centres around the creation of a C&D educational Tool Kit
comprised of case studies, decision making matrices and local
resources to assist building professionals and property owners in
evaluating options related to deconstruction, demolition, reuse or
moving of buildings.
Tool kit options will include financial, environmental, community and
heritage factors.
The project team will develop and deliver of a series of focus groups
and workshops to help the project identify needs and resources that
respond to these factors
Researcher Responsibilities
The Researcher reports to the EAC’s Built Environment Committee and
works closely with the Outreach Project Coordinator. This 25 hour per
week position will run for 10 months.
In addition to supporting the overall success of the project and
other duties as required, the Researcher has the following areas of
responsibility:
Researching, developing and producing the C&D Tool Kit
Organizing and facilitating focus groups
Disseminating the Tool Kit
Building a network of people working towards reducing C&D landfill
Supporting the overall activities of the EAC
Skills Required
Creativity and ability to take initiative
Excellent research and organizational skills
Experience in building construction/deconstruction, design, and
heritage issues
Excellent networking and interpersonal communication skills
Proven ability to work with diverse groups and people
Big picture thinker
Willingness to get your hands dirty
Environmentally aware
Experience in an NGO context, strongly preferred
Graphic design and/or database skills are an asset
Start Date: mid June 2009
End Date: April 2010
Hours and Wage: 25 hours/week at $17/hour
Location: EAC’s beautiful green office space in Halifax, Nova Scotia
