Groundwater Researcher (**position subject to funding**)

Freshwater Project of the Coastal Issues Committee

Ecology Action Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia 



ORGANIZATION 



The Ecology Action Centre, established in 1971, is Nova Scotia's largest
and most active environmental organization. We work on sustainable
transportation, marine and coastal issues, wilderness issues, urban
issues, sustainable food production and alternative energy.



The Groundwater Researcher will work under the supervision of the Water
Coordinator.  This position will also work closely with partners such as
the Department of Natural Resources to identify areas in Nova Scotia
that are currently experiencing groundwater shortages or where
groundwater resources are at-risk.  The research will provide the
foundation for a larger project called Groundswell: Community-Based
Support for Sustainable Groundwater Management in Nova Scotia.  

 

CRITERIA

 

Applicants must:

*	Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the
employment;
*	Have been registered as full-time students in the previous
academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the
next academic year;
*	Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom
refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee
Protection Act; and
*	Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with
relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

*         Using groundwater quantity index maps developed by DNR and
information from Municipalities, identify communities where groundwater
resources are limited or at risk of experiencing shortages

*         In consultation with project partners, select two or three
pilot communities where groundwater resources are at risk 

*         Establish connections with partners (academics, government,
NGOs, etc) within the community who may have expertise or interest in
helping with the project

*         Develop research tools (surveys or questionnaires) to conduct
with individuals living in pilot communities to gather information on
residential, institutional, industrial and commercial water wells
(whether they go dry, frequency, duration, etc) to better understand the
nature of the problems being encountered

*         Conduct research using developed tools to collect information 

*         Analyze information collected and write a report that
summarizes findings. 

*         Participate in and support the overall work of the Ecology
Action Centre

 

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS REQUIRED



*         Knowledge of water resources, geology or hydrogeology, or
related environmental science or geography 

*         Experience in designing and conducting social science research
projects, such as using surveys or questionnaires to gather information

*         Demonstrated ability to synthesize information from a variety
of sources

*         Ability to communicate with many different stakeholders 

*         Demonstrated leadership skills

*         Strong public speaking, writing skills and project management
skills 

*         Experience working in nonprofit, volunteer-driven
organizations an asset

*         Willing to travel within NS

*         Holds a valid Nova Scotia driver's license

*         Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and email

*         Preference will be given to candidates completing a degree
and/or relevant experience in the fields of environmental science, water
resources, hydrogeology, geography or other related fields

 

MENTORSHIP

*         The Groundwater Researcher will be part of and report to the
EAC's Coastal Issues Committee. The Groundwater Coordinator will receive
mentorship and support from EAC's Water and Coastal Coordinators. 

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full-time (35 hours per week) @ $15.00/hr for 16 weeks (May 10th, 2010
to August 27th, 2010)
