*EAC Marine Program: Sustainable Fisheries Campaigner*



The Ecology Action Centre was founded in 1971 and is now one of Nova
Scotia’s most active and largest environmental organizations. Our
well-established Marine Issues Committee focuses on ecological impacts of
fishing, sustainable seafood and sustainable livelihoods. Marine staff work
with local communities to promote local seafood and sustainable fisheries,
advocates for government policy that promotes conservation in addition to
working collaboratively with several other marine conservation organizations
in Canada and internationally. The position is based in our recently
renovated green building in the North End of Halifax.



The Sustainable Fisheries Campaign Coordinator will work with the Marine
Conservation Coordinator as well as other marine program staff and the
Marine Issues Committee to further marine conservation in Atlantic Canada
and beyond. We are seeking someone with a background in marine science and
an understanding of marine policy, both national and international. **

*General Responsibilities*

·      Coordinate campaign to address international conservation obligations
on the high seas

·      Coordinate work with other conservation organizations

·      Communicate with government representatives on a regular basis on
campaign objectives

·      Attend meetings of fisheries management organizations

·      This position may also require travel outside Halifax

·      Strategize and create effective public outreach plans and materials



*Experience*

·      Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles and methods used
in fisheries science

·      Knowledge and understanding / willingness to learn about national and
international fisheries policy instruments

·      Ability and willingness to translate scientific results into
information that can be understood by the general public

·      Ability and interest in conservation advocacy and non-profit
organizations

·      Campaign strategy planning

·      Media outreach and communication



*Skills*

·      Excellent communication skills

·      Writing and editing experience

·      Ability to take initiative on an individual basis as well as work
collaboratively

·      Exceptional organization skills



*Additional but not required*

·      Experience in marine conservation and Northwest Atlantic fisheries in
particular

·      Project management skills

·      Experience working in the non-profit sector



*Start Date: September 10, 2010*

*Hours and Wage*: 20hrs / week @ 20.50 / hr

*Position Length:* 6 months with potential for extension

*Location:* Halifax, Nova Scotia
