Groundwater Coordinator

Water program of the Coastal Issues Committee

Ecology Action Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia 

ORGANIZATION 

The Ecology Action Centre, established in 1971, is Nova Scotia's largest
and most active environmental organization. We work on sustainable
transportation, marine and coastal issues, wilderness issues, urban
issues, sustainable food production and alternative energy.

The Ecology Action Centre has recently launched Groundswell:
Community-Based Support for Sustainable Groundwater Use in Nova Scotia.
The goal of the program is to improve groundwater management in Nova
Scotia by developing and implementing a community-based groundwater
monitoring program in three pilot communities where groundwater is
vulnerable or at-risk.  The tools developed through this project will be
transferred to other communities through municipal planners.

 

The Groundwater Coordinator will be responsible for leading the
Groundswell program, and ensuring the development, implementation,
monitoring and evaluation, and dissemination of the community-based
groundwater monitoring program, s/he will also be responsible for
developing other groundwater projects as appropriate and ensuring
groundwater projects support existing initiatives of the Coastal Issues
Committee. 

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

 

*         Provide leadership and project management for the EAC's
Groundswell program

*         Develop and implement a community-based  groundwater
monitoring program in three pilot communities by working closely with
municipal and provincial government agencies responsible for groundwater
issues

*         Establish and build relationships with stakeholders in pilot
communities

*         Develop and use a variety of tools to assess groundwater
stress in pilot communities

*         Synthesize and communicate results of the groundwater
monitoring program 

*         Manage a budget and provide regular reports

*         Develop and secure funds for new groundwater projects as
appropriate

*         Collaborate with an inter-disciplinary advisory team 

*         Conduct program evaluation, final reporting and
recommendations

*         Work closely with the Water and Coastal Coordinators 

*         Participate in general work of EAC and the Coastal Issues
Committee

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS REQUIRED

*         Demonstrated leadership skills

*         Knowledge of  water resources, groundwater, hydrology or
hydrogeology, or related environmental science or geography 

*         Demonstrated understanding of water monitoring principles

*         Experience in community-based monitoring or citizen science
initiatives

*         Experience in volunteer coordination and working with
volunteers

*         Experience in project management, including fundraising,
work-planning and budgeting 

*         Ability to communicate with many different stakeholders,
including government staff, environmental NGOs, municipal planners,
industry representatives, etc. 

*         Strong public speaking and writing skills 

*         Experience designing and conducting social science research
projects, such as using surveys or questionnaires to gather information

*         Experience working in non-profit, volunteer-driven
organizations an asset

*         Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and email

*         Preference will be given to candidates completing a degree
and/or relevant experience in the fields of environmental science, water
resources, hydrogeology, geography or other related fields

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Two years
30 hours per week @ $20.00/hr
