VACANCY NOTICE
Executive Director NSGA - NOVA SCOTIA-GAMBIA ASSOCIATION
Reporting to: Board of Directors NSGA
Contract Length: 1 year (maternity leave)
Start Date: September 1st, 2010
The Nova Scotia -Gambia Association (NSGA) is an International Non -
Government Organisation (NGO) working in partnership with West Africans and
Canadians. The NSGA is an organisation that works together to create healthy
communities through education and health promotion initiatives.
General Description of the Role:
The Executive Director directs, manages and coordinates the operations of
the Nova Scotia - Gambia Association (NSGA) in Canada and overseas in
accordance with the Mission Statement of the Association, and the policies,
plans and procedures approved by the Board.
The Executive Director will focus on organizational capacity building,
profile-raising, and public engagement. The Executive Director will oversee
and monitor the work of our large and experienced staff in West Africa
ensuring the ongoing success and continuity of the work of NSGA.
Principle Tasks and Responsibilities
Fund Raising and Revenue Generation (25%)
* Generate funding submissions to international and national
foundations, grants, corporations and other funding sources within Canada
and internationally.
* Work with Board of Directors and volunteers to develop and implement
special events within Atlantic Canada to raise awareness and funds for NSGA.
Public Engagement and Communications (25%)
* Work closely with schools, colleges and universities- by offering
presentations and public engagement activities within Nova Scotia and
Atlantic Canada.
* Increase media coverage with local, national and international media
outlets regarding the work of NSGA.
* Develop relationships with community and service clubs (rotary,
senate clubs) in the region to increase knowledge of the work of NSGA
* Ensure NSGA communications materials are developed and distributed
widely among members, community and donors.
Program Planning and Management (20%)
. Together with NSGA Board of Directors and Country Director in
The Gambia, set strategic directions for the organization.
. Monitor and evaluate existing NSGA programs to ensure maximum
effectiveness.
. Manage donor relations and ensure all donor expectations are
met, including narrative and financial reporting.
. Ensure the expansion of projects using a community based
participatory approach to program and proposal development.
Human Resources Management (15%)
. Ensure that all staff and volunteers in Canada and West
Africa have clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities and are
receiving ongoing feedback as well as annual performance reviews.
. Support the development of staff through capacity building
opportunities such as training, cultural exchanges, and other growth
opportunities.
. Develop and recommend for Board approval, and administer
policies and procedures with respect to position, recruitment, hiring,
termination, contractual arrangements, performance appraisal and
salary/benefits.
Financial Management (15%)
* Provide overall financial management and control for NSGA operations
in Canada and West Africa.
* Work closely with the Finance Manager to prepare the annual
administrative budget of the Association for approval by the Board; and be
accountable for the control of financial resources once the budget has been
approved.
* Work closely with Finance staff in Canada and West Africa to ensure
proper financial reporting to donors.
Essential Requirements
. Minimum of five years of previous experience in senior management
role with a non-governmental or government organization
. University degree (Master's level preferred) in a relevant field
. Proven experience securing funding for a non-profit organisation
. Solid experience in community based planning, implementation and
monitoring through participatory processes
. Demonstrated project and financial management skills and experience
. Advanced communication and interpersonal skills
. Strong leadership and management skills
. Experience working internationally (West Africa an asset)
