PROVINCE SEEKS INPUT ON RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY REGULATIONS
People and organizations with an interest in renewable electricity
generation are invited to comment on draft regulations designed to guide the
implementation of the province's new renewable electricity plan. Earlier
this spring, government introduced its plan to achieve 25 per cent renewable
electricity by 2015, and set a goal of 40 per cent renewable electricity by
2020. Legislation supporting the plan was passed last month. The regulations
establish eligibility for community-based projects and a process for
determining how they get paid, along with a special process to support the
next stage of tidal development. They also establish a new renewable
electricity administrator to manage bids for larger projects from
independent power producers. Copies of the Renewable Electricity Plan and
the draft regulations are available online on the Department of Energy
website at www.gov.ns.ca/energy or by calling 902-424-8802. Submissions can
be made by e-mail to renewableregs at gov.ns.ca or in writing to, Department of
Energy, Renewable Regulations, 400-5151 George St., P.O. Box 2664, Halifax,
N.S., B3J 3P7. The deadline for submissions is July 23. A series of public
meetings will be held around the province later this spring to discuss the
regulations. Check the department website in the coming weeks for
consultation dates and locations. More information here:

Climate change is affecting the biogeochemistry of the ocean. The ocean
serves as a sink for large quantities of atmospheric carbon dioxide, but
this ecosystem service comes at a price: the dissolution of carbon dioxide
acidifies seawater, which affects the ability of marine organisms to form
calcareous shells and skeletons. Efforts to manage both the causes and
effects of acidification are beginning. For example, the Center for
Biological Diversity and Environmental Protection Agency recently reached a
settlement on using the Clean Water Act to address ocean acidification. This
is one of the tools that may help ocean and coastal managers respond to the
potentially devastating impacts of climate change on the marine environment.
Panelists representing the scientific, nongovernmental, federal, and
regulated communities will address the litigation, legislation, and research
being undertaken and developed to address these changing ocean conditions:
Panelists:
Dr. Nancy Knowlton, Sant Chair for Marine Science, Smithsonian Institution
William Snape, Senior Counsel, Center for Biological Diversity
Christine Ruf, Senior Policy Analyst, Watersheds Branch, US Environmental
Protection Agency
Attendees are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.
The Ocean Seminar Series 2010 is made possible by generous support from the
Naomi and Nehemiah Cohen Foundation.
