FILM SCREENINGS "PETROPOLIS: AERIAL PERSPECTIVES ON THE ALBERTA TAR SANDS" &
"DOWNSTREAM"
Monday, November 15
7:00 pm
Just Us! Café, 5896 Spring Garden Rd. Halifax
Free, public film screenings. Donations would be appreciated.
Join us for a cup of fair trade, organic coffee and to watch two short
films. "Petropolis: Aerial Perspectives on the Alberta Tar Sands" and
"Downstream” about the largest industrial development in the world, the
Alberta tarsands, and the courageous doctor Dr. John O'Connor who has stood
up for the Aboriginal people of Fort Chipewyan and the natural environment
downstream. Organized by the Nova Scotia Environmental Network.
www.nsen.ca or email: nsen at cen-rce.org

About the documentary "Petropolis": it was filmed entirely from a helicopter
high above the massive bitumen-producing operation, the better to show the
enormous scale of the devastation wreaked on the north-central Alberta
wilderness. Produced by Greenpeace Canada, the short (43 minutes). This
makes for a hypnotically beautiful film-viewing experience, despite the
destruction below and the sense of underlying, profound sadness.

About the documentary "Downstream": tells the heartbreaking, yet hopeful,
story of the people of Fort Chipewyan and their resolve to stop the strip
mining of oil and pollution of their water in Alberta's boreal forest. The
story of the community's deep inner resources and the committed doctor, Dr.
John O’Connor, who comes to their aid is uplifting, even as it is set
against the daunting larger tale of our oil addiction and those who conspire
to feed it

About Dr. John O’Connor: He is a family physician, practicing in Nova
Scotia, and Alberta. He is married to Charlene, an RN, his soulmate. They
have 7 children. Dr. O’Connor has been in Canada since 1984 based in Nova
Scotia and Alberta. In Fort McMurray, Dr. John O’Connor provides primary
care service to three First Nation communities where he noticed what
appeared to be an inordinate number of people with significant illnesses,
including cancers.

**ACTION ALERT:
SAY NO TO THE F35’s : Find out about the F-35 Lockheed Martin Joint Strike
Fighters: www.ceasefire.ca

F-35 STEALTH FIGHTERS ARE FOR 'SHOCK AND AWE' WARFARE, NOT CANADA'S NEEDS
The federal government is rushing forward with a plan to buy 65 Lockheed
Martin F-35 stealth fighter jets for $16 billion (cost overruns expected and
more costs for maintenance and could reach $26 billion of Canadians’ tax
dollars), for battles Canada is highly unlikely to ever fight. We don't need
them for bombing missions, and there is in reality no Russian bomber threat.
Sixteen billion dollars is a lot of money, and we can't afford them.
Canadians want their tax dollars spent on child care, education, healthcare,
and the environment.

Find out more:

Please let your MP and the Prime Minister know you don’t want your tax
dolloars spent on fighter jets. Email the Prime Minister at: pm at pm.gc.ca
