SINGING
SOLIDARITY: VOICES OF MARITIME ARTISTS

A
fund-raising project for the Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network
(BTS)

This CD is a
compilation of songs and spoken word pieces from Maritime artists who have
donated one of their recordings to this project. Their voices speak of knowing
the land and its rivers, the rending and violence that comes when people are
separated from their rights to land and water, individual and collective
resistance, solidarity, dignity, hope and affirmation. The songs evoke
commitments to justice, equality and peace.

Some of the
artists have roots in Prince Edward Island (Lennie Gallant, Tara MacLean, Scott
Parsons, Nancy White); others live in or come from Nova Scotia (Coco Love
Alcorn, Wilf Bean, Four the Moment, Cheryl Gaudet, Shauntay Grant, Old Man
Luedecke); and others live in New Brunswick (Border Crossing, Cesar Morales and
R.A. Lautenschlager). Singers on the Carolyn McDade contribution come from all
three maritime provinces as well as from other parts of Canada and the USA. We
appreciate the generosity of the artists in their support of this CD.

All proceeds
from sales of this CD will contribute to Breaking the Silence Network’s
solidarity work. The CD is available for $20 in the Tatamagouche Centre gift
shop and can be ordered by contacting in Halifax: Corrie Melanson (corrie.melanson at bellaliant.net)
and in PEI: Margie
Loo (loomargie at gmail.com).

This CD is a
fund-raising initiative of the Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence
Network. During the 1980s, the Mayan people and social activists in Guatemala
became targets of the army in a genocidal war. In 1988, the Tatamagouche Centre
initiated a solidarity relationship with groups in Guatemala. This led to the
formation in 1992 of the Breaking the Silence Network (BTS), known by our
partners as La Red Rompiendo El Silencio. BTS works with partner organizations
to develop relationships and projects based on solidarity, friendship and human
rights advocacy. BTS organizes and supports delegations, human rights
accompaniment, youth internships and fair trade relationships.
