SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITY

2 Summer Student Positions: Community Food Researcher and Farmers’ Markets Communications And Marketing Guru

Organization: Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia http://www.farmersmarketsnovascotia.ca

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Food Alliance/ Farmers Markets of Nova Scotia have received approval for two summer student positions:-

• starting June 13th or 20th,

• for 30hrs a week @ $12/hr

• for 10 weeks

• in Halifax (Quinpool Road).

As per the requirements of this program, the successful applicant must:

• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

• have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year (2010-2011) and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year (2011-2012);

• be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and

• be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

The two positions are for

A community food researcher; constructing a community food map of Halifax and 2 other communities (minimum) including all public and private organizations who work in the food sector plus media (who write about food and agriculture) tools and resources. The goal is to identify areas of possible collaboration, areas of duplication of service and gaps that need to be filled and fall within the mandate of the Food Alliance or Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia.

This position would be ideal for a Social Sciences, Nutrition, Food Sciences, Biosciences, Health, Education or Business student but if you can come up with a compelling case for why this would suit you and your background then we will surely consider you.

A farmers' markets communications and marketing guru! : Many farmers' markets do not have a Facebook Page and many do not even have a website. The website and Facebook pages of Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia are underutilized. We do however have a well read monthly E-newsletter, but we have problems getting content from member markets to include in it. We need someone who can come up with a system that will reduce the amount of work it takes for farmers' markets to communicate with each other, their communities and the media and to streamline Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia's own internal and external communications systems.

This position would be ideal for a Marketing, Media, Communications, Journalism, Education or Business student but if you can come up with a compelling case for why this would suit you and your background then we will surely consider you.

Please send email your resume to the email below providing the contact information for two people who can offer references and a cover letter stating

• which position you are interested in

• why you are interested in that position

• what skills you will bring to the position

• How you propose to tackle the tasks that we have presented you with (remember that the position will not exist after the ten weeks is complete, so the goal is to produce something that will not require a large amount of maintenance after you have left).
