Position Title: Transition Coordinator
Employer: ACORN (Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network) http://www.acornorganic.org
Location: Sackville, NB (preferred) although home based may be possible for the right candidate

Position Type: Full time contract position for ~14 weeks
Remuneration: $20 /hr (contractor must issue invoices)
Hours: Approximately 35 hrs/week, with some evening/weekend and travel required, as needed.

Closing Date: December 14, 2012

Contract Dates: December 18 2012 - March 31, 2013

Position Summary

ACORN is seeking an out-going, motivated individual to provide support for our organic transition program, which provides outreach and information to farmers and new entrants interested in, or considering, organic certification. This position will work closely with the Executive Director and Organic Transition Specialist to develop materials to support growers, and ensure the implementation of the organic transition strategy. This position is funded through the NRC-IRAP program.

ACORN is a membership-based co-operative non-profit organization based out of Sackville, NB. Since 2000, ACORN has been the key organization for information on organic agriculture, eating organics, and connecting all the parts together in Atlantic Canada. From seed to farmer to consumer, ACORN works to bring the whole picture together--making food choices healthier and more environmentally responsible.

Key Responsibilities

• Promote broad awareness of organic transition program in all four provinces;
• Work with certification bodies (CBs) operating in the region to identify their needs for transition support; document the barriers the CBs are experiencing from new entrants considering the transition; and compile this information in a report which profiles regional CBs and includes challenges and opportunities for organic certification in the region;
• Organize logistics for regional workshops on organic production (including 2 day Greenhouse Workshop), and help develop and promote additional meetings and webinars in Atlantic Canada;
• Work closely with Organic Specialist in generating new resources and updating existing documents;
• Research and write factsheets and reports on key aspects of organic certification;
• Update website and other web media with key information/resources;
• Follow-up with users of the organic transition program services;

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of, and comfort working with, the Canadian Organic Standards and Permitted Substances List;
• Experience with organic certification or regulation a strong asset;
• Minimum three years work experience with organic and/or non-organic agricultural production;
• Strong computer proficiency including word processing, data management, internet applications, web updating, social media applications etc;
• Excellent written communication and formatting skills;
• Comfortable with on-line and telephone communications;
• Experience with workshop development and event promotion;
• Takes initiative;
• Eligibility for professional agrologist (P. Ag.) designation an asset;
• Bilingualism (French/English) an asset;
• Driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle;
