FREE PUBLIC TALK “WARRIOR NATION: REBRANDING CANADA IN AN AGE OF ANXIETY”
Authors Ian McKay and Jamie Swift
Thursday, October 11, 7pm
Saint Mary’s University, Sobey School of Business, 4th Floor, Halifax Once known for peacekeeping, Canada is becoming a militarized nation whose apostles—the New Warriors—are fighting to shift public opinion. New Warrior zealots seek to transform postwar Canada’s central myth-symbols. Peaceable kingdom. Just society. Multicultural tolerance. Reasoned public debate. Their replacements? A warrior nation. Authoritarian leadership. Permanent political polarization.
The tales cast a vivid light on a story that is crucial to Canada’s future; yet they are also compelling history. Swashbuckling marauder William Stairs, the Royal Military College graduate who helped make the Congo safe for European pillage. Vimy Ridge veteran and Second World War general Tommy Burns, leader of the UN’s first big peacekeeping operation, a soldier who would come to call imperialism “the monster of the age.” Governor General John Buchan, a concentration camp developer and race theorist who is exalted in the Harper government’s new Citizenship Guide. And that uniquely Canadian paradox, Lester Pearson. Warrior Nation is an essential read for those concerned by the relentless effort to conscript Canadian history.

Created by the National Film Board of Canada in 2010, Grace, Milly, Lucy… Child Soldiers will introduce viewers to the little-known reality of more than 30,000 Ugandan children who have been abducted by repel troops and forced into armed conflict. Many of these child soldiers are girls. Combining personal accounts and scenes from daily life, this documentary conjures up the stifled echoes of a painful past and dares to believe that a better future is within reach for these women who are united in a common struggle. WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT: SALMON FARMING IN LAND-BASED CLOSED-CONTAINMENT SYSTEMS Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History Auditorium, Halifax, Nova Scotia October 13, 2012 8:30am to 12:00 noon The Atlantic Salmon Federation, the Conservation Fund Freshwater Institute and the Ecology Action Center are pleased to host a ½ day workshop on closed containment land based salmon aquaculture.
Steve Summerfelt and Christopher Good, of the Conservation Fund Freshwater Institute, will be leading this workshop to inform attendees on the current status of this exciting technology.
Workshop presentations will give an overview on the status of land-based closed-containment systems, plus lessons learned regarding the biological, technical, and economic feasibility of Atlantic salmon production in such systems.
Current open net pen aquaculture practices are causing much controversy and have been shown to cause harm to coastal environments and wild fish species, specifically wild Atlantic salmon. Many communities are opposed to this type of aquaculture in their coastal zones. Closed containment aquaculture shows much promise as a viable alternative to this method of raising fish. ASF has partnered with the Conservation Fund Freshwater Institute to investigate ways to improve closed containment technologies and techniques in order to make this method of aquaculture more viable as a commercial industry. We would like to share the results of our efforts to date.Space is limited, so please reserve a seat at this workshop by contacting Lewis Hinks at: lhinks at auracom.com
