Join our team for the Tatamagouche Social Justice Youth Camp 2013!
DEADLINE: 5pm on April 26th, 2013
Context:
The Social Justice Youth Camp (SJYC) has a now ten-year history of providing learning opportunities and raising awareness of current social justice and environmental issues for young Atlantic Canadians. We aim to build the understanding and capacity of both campers and facilitators to address social justice issues, with an intent to contribute to the region's population of caring, informed and committed social justice advocates and activists.
To that end, in building our facilitation team, we prioritize selecting individuals who come from diverse backgrounds and experiences - people who bring passion, experience (not necessarily in facilitation or youth work), creativity, and a collaborative, supportive approach to teamwork. Furthermore, we privilege those applicants who show a commitment to working from the region, although those applying from outside the Maritime provinces are not discouraged from doing so.
We are more than an “equal opportunity employer” - we actively seek out voices from the margins and challenge ourselves to make the SJYC a space for deep learning and structural change. If you identify as someone with experiences or perspectives that challenge the status quo - whether that be based on race, spoken language, gender, socio-economic class, and/or otherwise - and get excited about the possibility of sharing your wisdom with others, we are excited to hear from you!
In line with this context, we have made a specific commitment that at least 50% of our team (facilitators and coordinators) be made up of racialized people. Given the hiring that has already happened, this means that at least 3 of the 5 facilitator positions we are looking to fill with this posting will be comprised of people of colour or indigenous people.
DESCRIPTION
Role:
To be part of a dynamic and diverse team of facilitators running the SJYC. Facilitators will vision, plan, and execute relevant workshops and activities at the camp, while monitoring group dynamics and ensuring a supportive environment for all participants.
Supervisors: Camp Coordinators
Primary Responsibilities

Facilitators are required to participate in one training and one planning session prior to the camp. The sessions both strengthen the facilitation team, and begin to outline that year's program (May 30 - June 2, and July 5-7)

Facilitate the implementation of planned workshops.
Participate in the evaluation of group activities.

Facilitate the participation of youth in daily workshops.
Ensure that participants respect established community standards, both during formal programming and during unstructured leisure time.

The facilitation team is made up of 6-8 facilitators. Facilitators are expected to provide mutual support to colleagues throughout the training, and camp.
Skills and Experience:
Experience with group facilitation is an asset.
Prior experience or interest in working with youth.
Active interest and involvement in social justice, community building, social transformation and environmental issues.
Able to work (possibly across distances) with other facilitators to develop program content throughout the summer.
Experience working in a cross-cultural environment is an asset.
Ability to adapt and adjust approaches to meet participant needs.

Pre-Camp planning: July 5-7
Camp: August 25 (set-up and prep) - 30th, 2013

Remuneration:
You will gain accredited training and experience in youth programming
All meals, accommodations, travel (within the Maritime Provinces) and tuition are covered for the trainings and the camp.
Honorarium: Facilitators have always received compensation for their efforts however the amount is dependent on success of fundraising and numbers of camp participants - first priority is to ensure camp is accessible for all participants - if this is a barrier, please speak with camp coordinators for alternative arrangements
To apply:
To apply please send your letter of interest and resume to Andrew, Rena & Rachel at tata.sjyc at gmail.com by 5pm on April 26th. Interviews will be held (in person or via phone) between May 2nd - May 5th. Thank you for your interest!
