Job Posting, Full-time permanent position

Volunteer and Events Coordinator
The Ecology Action Centre (EAC), established in 1971, is Nova Scotia's largest and most active environmental organization. We are seeking a full-time Volunteer and Events Coordinator to join our team. Overview of the Position
This role is a central one at the Ecology Action Centre. We hold three major fundraising events each year. They are reflect our values and are a critical part of keeping the Centre thriving financially. These events collectively contribute almost $50,000 to the EAC's operations. Plus, they are fun and engaging! The events are: Organic Christmas Tree Campaign, Bluenose Marathon Team - Green Avengers, our Garden Party and Auction. These events involve considerable volunteer participation and leadership.  In total, approximately 300 volunteers work with the EAC in a wide variety of roles. Volunteers are engaged at all levels of the organization and we work to provide them with meaningful and productive ways to contribute to our mission. Volunteers bring grass roots engagement to our work, allow us to be effective with our resources, amplify the efforts of our staff, and bring a greater diversity to our organization.

Responsibilities
In addition to supporting the overall functioning of the Ecology Action Centre and other duties as required, the Volunteer and Events Coordinator has two primary areas of responsibility:

Fundraising & Outreach Events assisting with logistics and ensuring the success of our three major fundraising events; thinking creatively about how to grow and evolve our event-based fundraising; coordinating or assisting with various other membership and outreach events.

Volunteer Coordination recruiting, training and supervising a team of ten front desk volunteers; attracting, appreciating, and supporting volunteers; and working closely with staff to identify volunteer needs and opportunities; working with the Volunteer Committee.

Other tasks may include managing small projects and playing a role in committees or initiatives related to public engagement. The Volunteer and Events Coordinator reports to the Managing Director and integrates their work with our operations team to effectively support the EAC and our project staff.

Required Skills/Experience

  *   Experience with training, supervising and motivating volunteers
  *   Experience with event planning
  *   Proven ability to meet targets and deadlines
  *   Excellent communication skills, written and oral
  *   Excellent organizational skills
  *   Experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to fostering diverse workplaces

Required Characteristics/Qualities

  *   Calm, adaptable and solution-oriented
  *   Organized and conscientious

Terms: 35 hours per week at $17.50/hour. Benefits plan and 4 weeks paid vacation.

Location: Ecology Action Centre's beautiful green office in Halifax's North End

Start Date: Late October 2013

Hours of work: Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm (some room for negotiation). Some evening/weekend work will be required.
