APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITY

Position: Organic Farm Apprenticeship
Type: full-time apprenticeship with meals, accom., stipend (see below)
Organization: Bantry Bay Farm http://www.bantrybayfarm.ca
Location: Saint Andrews-By-The-Sea, Bay of Fundy, near St. John, New Brunswick

Come join three friends on our picturesque farm just outside the historic town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, NB. Venturing into our ninth year of farming we are growing 2.5 acres of mixed vegetables for an 90 share CSA, the St. Andrews Farmer's market, and several local restaurants including The Rossmount Inn and Savour (Family owned businesses aimed at celebrating what can be done with the local bounty of this county). We have five greenhouses/tunnels, a tractor, and 100 acres of hayfields, forest, ponds, and sandy beach - it's only a five minute walk from hard work in the field to a cool dip in the ocean! George, the local horse, always welcomes a friendly visit, especially if you are holding carrots or apples. We invite you to enjoy vegetarian meals with us in the farm house and take part in the post-meal banter that is a part of our learning experience. There is also the option of local, free range, organic meat.

Accommodations are a two bedroom house nestled into a cozy corner of the farm.  With a beautiful new cedar porch looking out on to the farm and ocean (and built by a local craftsman),  it is the perfect place to relax and reflect after a good days work.

When we aren't working directly with the soil and plants, Luke is a part time music teacher/musician and loves to have someone pick up one of our instruments and join in the playing;  Mike is always happy to share his plethora of board games with someone new; and Kath is working on building a home pottery studio and finishing a woodfired oven for her family.  There is great fun to be had if you like the outdoors, from swimming, hiking and climbing to whale watching, bike touring and kayaking.  There is also a great variety of music, art and nature discovery!

Over the last 5 years we feel we have developed a strong curriculum for anyone interested in learning how to start and run a small vegetable operation. We love to share our ideas and experience with interested interns. Apprentices will have an opportunity to work alongside the three of us, as well as independently, learning about and taking part in all the tasks of a farming season, such as:
• crop planning and planting
• seedling care and direct seed planting
• field prep: ploughing, discing, tilling
• greenhouse management (four seasons)
• CSA management
• weed control and pest management
• irrigation
• crop specific practices
• record keeping and finances
• organic certification
• harvesting and post-harvest handling for market and CSA
• teaching and leadership
• marketing options: CSA, Farmer's Market, Restaurants, Wholesale
• season extension
• how to start a farm (even with no previous farm experience)

We are looking for 1 or 2 apprentices who are self-motivated, take pride in their work, and are passionate about sustainable farming and living. We would like to host apprentices who can commit to staying for the whole season. Our apprenticeship program aims to give you a well rounded understanding of what it takes to operate a small scale farm and provide a safe and fun learning environment to do it in. For those seeking more formal training in organic agriculture, we also participate in the Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network's (ACORN) Grow A Farmer Program (see http://www.growafarmer.ca).

A stipend will be available to those who can commit to at least 4 months and a completion bonus available to those who can stay the whole season.

Location: St. Andrews, NB, approximately 94 km from St. John.
