ACAP Cape Breton and the CBRM Water Utility are inviting residents to get
outdoors for a lake-side snowshoe in New Waterford this Sunday, February
24th. This Winter Watershed Walk* *will explore Waterford Lake, which
supplies drinking water to New Waterford and surrounding communities.
Snowshoes, snacks, and hot chocolate will be provided.

In addition to spectacular winter views of the lake, the walk will pass
through walking trails surrounding a nearby former mine waste site,
referred to at the Summit Site. The site has undergone extensive
remediation work and continues to be closely monitored to protect the
watershed and public water supply.

Britt Roscoe, CBRM Water Utility Watershed Coordinator commented on the
remediation work, “The CBRM Water Utility is satisfied that the Cape Breton
Development Corporation remediated the Summit Site with a goal to protect
Waterford Lake. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) and the CBRM
continue to work cooperatively to oversee the long term care and monitoring
of the site and its effects on Waterford Lake’s water quality. This walk
will allow folks to see just how close the lake is to a major mine waste
site, but will explain what has been put in place to protect the water.”

The walk will take place on Sunday, February 24th from 2:00 to 4:00,
beginning at the New Waterford Water Treatment Plant at 190 Daley Road. The
storm date for the event is March 3rd, 2013. The walk is part of a series
of Watershed Walks promoting the exploration and stewardship of our public
water sources.
