*Employment Opportunity: Sustainability Program Summer Coordinator*
*Position Summary*: The Sustainability Program Summer Coordinator will work
with the Sustainability Planner to improve and expand the Town of
Bridgewater's community initiatives that stem from its sustainability
program. The primary responsibility for this position (occupying about 80%
of their work time) will be to coordinate the planning and management of
the annual Growing Green Sustainability Festival, which takes place August
21-24, 2014. To accomplish this, the Coordinator will work closely with the
Festival Planning Team for about 3 months of planning work leading up to
the event, have significant responsibilities on-location on the event days,
and be involved in wrap-up and evaluation after the event. A secondary
responsibility for the Coordinator will be to work with the Bridgewater
Community Gardens Network to coordinate gardening-related programming and
education, and to take part in occasional garden maintenance and
improvement. The Coordinator is not expected to have expertise in gardening
because they will receive some gardening skill training from experienced
gardeners and landscapers. However, experience and interest in gardening is
considered an asset. Finally, the Coordinator will assist in research and
program development for other sustainability initiatives as needed. The
Coordinator reports to the Director of Planning, and their work will be
closely supervised by the Sustainability Planner.
*Timeframe*: The Sustainability Program Summer Coordinator will work for 16
weeks, starting on Monday, May 12, and ending on Friday, August 29.
*Salary*: Remuneration for this position will be $14.00 per hour plus
mandatory employer contributions and 4% vacation pay.
*Working Conditions*: Sustainability Program Summer Coordinator will work
from an office located at Bridgewater Town Hall (60 Pleasant Street,
Bridgewater, NS), where a computer and phone / internet connections will be
provided. Work will also take place at the locations of the Bridgewater
Community Gardens Network sites, where lifting heavy materials and bending
down will be necessary. The Coordinator will need to supply their own
gardening clothing including rain gear. The Coordinator will also regularly
make trips out of the office for Festival related business, including
attending meetings, acquiring supplies, and managing events. A Town vehicle
will be provided for these trips if necessary. Regular working hours will
be Monday to Friday, 8:30AM - 4:30PM in May and June, and 8:00AM - 4:00PM
in July and August (7 hours per day, plus a 1-hr lunch break). However, the
Coordinator will be expected to regularly attend meetings and events
outside of work hours, including evenings and weekends. To be eligible for
this position, the Coordinator must commit to being available for work on
the weekend of August 23-24, 2014, to manage the Growing Green
Sustainability Festival. All hours worked outside of regular office hours
may be taken off as flex time. There is no paid overtime for this position.
*Eligibility Requirements*: Due to funding received for this position
through the Canada Summer Jobs program (pending), the successful applicant
must meet the following minimum eligibility requirements:
- Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
- Was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic
year
- Intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next
academic year
- Is a student in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only),
vocational or technical program
- Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee
protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection
Act (foreign students are not eligible)
- Is legally entitled to work according to Nova Scotia legislation and
regulations
*Qualifications*: Educational Background in Recreation Management, Leisure
Studies, Sustainability Studies, Environmental Sciences, Community
Development, Planning, Business Administration, Marketing, Communications,
or other field related to this work. Previous experience organizing
community events, working with volunteers, and gardening are considered
strong assets. Combination of education and experience may also be
considered. A valid Class 5 NS Driver's License is required.
*Essential Skills:*
- Strong organizational, management, and reporting skills;
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills;
- Able to work well independently, solve problems, and meet deadlines
under pressure;
- Interest in community development, festivals and events, and/or
sustainability or the environment.
