McNabs Island Beach Cleanup nets children’s carousel pony, Chanel perfume bottle, stuffed toy lobster and more…


Halifax - June 2, 2014

On Sunday June 1, 250 volunteers travelled to McNabs Island in Halifax Harbour to clean up the beaches of the provincial park. Volunteers of all ages kicked off Environment Week by “thinking globally but act locally” cleaning up the shoreline of the island that gets littered with garbage which washes ashore following winter storms.

In total, volunteers collected 600 bags of garbage and recyclables. Among the most unusual items found this year was a children’s carousel pony reminiscent of the Bill Lynch Shows that originated on McNabs Island in the 1930s. This plastic pony, estimated to be more than 20 years old, is still in good condition and was taken home by NSCAD art student Kelsey Walker who will clean it up and use it for an art display. Other unusual items found this year included a Chanel perfume bottle, a stuffed toy lobster, an old iron bedpost, a deep freezer and very large pieces of Styrofoam from a floating dock.

Among the recurring items found in the beach debris were plastics of all kinds, including broken fish crates, plastic bags, and plastic tampon applicators from Halifax’s sewage treatment plants. These plastic applicators are supposed to be screened out, but continue to plague the beaches of this beautiful provincial park. Tim Horton’s coffee cups are also one of the more common items found on the beaches. These cups have a plastic liner and don’t break down.

This is the twenty-third year that the Friends of McNabs Island Society has organized a cleanup of McNabs Island.  Since 1991, volunteers have collected a staggering 11,600 bags of garbage and recyclables from the beaches of this Provincial Park and national historic site. The McNabs and Lawlor Islands Provincial Park cleanup is the longest running and largest cleanup in the Maritimes.

Thanks to all the volunteers who gave up a beautiful warm sunny Sunday to make the McNabs Cleanup a success. Thanks to McInnes Cooper, Ascenta Health, and Waterfront Development for sponsoring volunteers; Clean Nova Scotia for providing garbage bags; Schooner Industrial and Esso – Imperial Oil for providing gloves; Murphy’s Cable Wharf and A & M Sea Charters for transporting volunteers; Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources staff for transporting the garbage to the main wharf and A&M Sea Charters for hauling the garbage back to Eastern Passage where it was picked up by garbage trucks for final disposal and recycling. At the end of the day, Sugah! in Halifax provided welcomed ice cream treats for tired volunteers.
