** “Cleaning up McNabs Island” to be screened at Halifax Ocean Film Festival June 15

June 13, 2014
On Sunday June 15, Jerry Lockett’s film, Cleaning up McNabs Island, will be featured at the opening night of the 5th annual Halifax Ocean Film Festival (http://mcnabsisland.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=fa8f9fd27de7a1bbbd8d58640&id=e57f3970ff&e=0c83f0457b) (HOFF) during the Ocean Shorts and Stories segment of the festival.
The film festival will be held at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (http://mcnabsisland.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=fa8f9fd27de7a1bbbd8d58640&id=fd503db773&e=0c83f0457b) , 1675 Lower Water Street. It is open to the public and FREE. Screenings start at 7PM.
Cleaning up McNabs Island was shot last June at the annual McNabs Island Beach Cleanup. The film captures the plague of ocean pollution that brings garbage to this 400-hectare provincial park and national historic site, and the enthusiasm of volunteers willing to spend a day cleaning it up.
For those unable to attend the festival the film can be seen on YouTube.com (http://mcnabsisland.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=fa8f9fd27de7a1bbbd8d58640&id=fb7aed70a3&e=0c83f0457b)
The beach cleanup has been an annual event of the Friends of McNabs Island since 1991. Over this time, a staggering 11,600 bags of garbage have been collected from the beaches of McNabs Island in Halifax Harbour. This year’s cleanup alone netted 600 bags of garbage and recyclables that washed up on the beaches following last winter’s many storms.
Jerry Lockett has been writing about conservation and the oceans for more than 25 years. His magazine article credits include BBC Wildlife, Blue Water Sailing, Conservator, The Chronicle Herald, Cruising World, Equinox, Geographical Magazine, and New Scientist. He is a two-time Atlantic Journalism Awards finalist, and is the author of two award-winning books: Captain James Cook in Atlantic Canada and The Discovery of Weather. Cleaning up McNabs Island is his first broadcast film.
