Position: Environmental Technician

Position Summary:

Eastern Charlotte Waterways Inc. (ECW) is a not-for-profit environmental resource and research centre in southwestern New Brunswick. In partnership with the Government of Canada’s Science Horizons Program, ECW is seeking candidates for a six-month full-time position. The successful candidate will assist with the implementation of the environmental programs at Eastern Charlotte Waterways. The position will be based at the ECW office in Blacks Harbour, NB. Duties:
• Create a GIS that addresses climate change, including layers for community vulnerabilities, predicted sea level rise, depth to water table information, and geo-referenced items including newspaper articles, photo evidence, and anecdotal observations of climate change impacts.
• Conduct regular water quality monitoring in local rivers using a YSI multimeter and turbidity meter.
• Conduct land-based assessments of watershed health.
• Provide in-field leadership for ECW summer students and volunteer tree planting events.
• Safely operate a small vessel on lake waters
• Safely operate a four wheel drive vehicle and boat trailer
• Monitor progress of projects, track deliverables, and revise project activities accordingly
• Write progress reports for funders and disseminate information to stakeholders
• Assist with clerical and general maintenance tasks as directed

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working with GIS databases and editing using ESRI ArcGIS software, including use of ESRI software and Global Positioning System units for data collection.
• Experience conducting environmental monitoring, preferably in aquatic environments.
• Experience in tree planting and/or forest management services
• Grant writing, reporting, and implementation experience.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, time management, and problem solving skills
• Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
• Ability to carry out the physical demands of the job
• Valid driver’s license
• Valid first aid certification
• Valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card

Mandatory Qualifications:
• Have graduated with a degree or diploma from a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institution or CEGEP. These may be privately or publicly funded institutions.
• Are not attending school.
• Are unemployed or under-employed (working in a position that requires less than a person's knowledge, skill or ability).
• Are not in receipt of Employment Insurance during the position.
• Are aged 30 years or under (at the commencement of the project).
• Are legally entitled to work in Canada.

The deadline to apply is 4:00PM ADT on May 21st, 2014.
The position will begin on June 2nd, 2014 and conclude on November 28th, 2014.
The wage for the position is commensurate with experience.
