Hours of work: 40 hours
Compensation: $22-24/hour, based on experience
Temporary: 1-year contract

COMPANY:

Aerosan is a Canadian not-for-profit working in the field of sanitation in humanitarian emergencies. Our work focuses on low-cost, robust and field deployable emergency sanitation systems, which emphasize complete containment of excreta.

JOB SUMMARY: 

The incumbent will work under the direction of the Executive Director to help to validate our ecological sanitation system. The incumbent will develop waste-to-value treatment processes to integrate with our toilets and conduct research and field-testing into waste volatilization, urine evaporation, anaerobic and aerobic digestion, biogas generation, and composting. The end goal is to integrate our current system into a systems approach to give total sanitation results.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Designing and implementing a biological waste-to-value treatment process;
• Integrating the biological treatment process with the Aerosan toilet;
• Assisting in the design and planning of field testing protocol to create clearly defined test objectives;
• Conducting field testing independently;
• Troubleshoot and respond to problems encountered during field trials;
• Providing reporting and documentation for Executive Director;
• Supporting the writing, proof-reading, formatting and preparation of standard operating procedures;
• Assisting in the development of a small-scale anaerobic digester for human excreta;
• Assisting in the analysis of biogas composition.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• University degree in environmental, engineering, chemistry, or biology related field or equivalent work experience;
• Experience working in wastewater treatment, composting and/or waste management;
• The ideal candidate has excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills and is able to resolve problems independently;
• Experience conducting research and setting up field trials

ASSETS:

• International development and/or international field work experience;
• Knowledge of dry toilet systems and/or ecological sanitation;
• Motivated self-starter and team player;
• Professional conduct (i.e. ability to adhere to an organization's code of conduct and interact with colleagues and clients in a respectful manner);
• Strong time management, prioritization and organizational skills;
• Experience working both independently and as a team member;
