Location: Fall River, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Status: Temporary, June 16 - August 30, 2015
Hours: 35 hours/week

Overview: 

The Shubenacadie Watershed Environmental Protection Society (SWEPS) was formed in 1993 and strives to maintain or improve the water quality of the Shubenacadie River watershed for economic, environmental, recreational and life supporting purposes. To achieve this goal, SWEPS engages community members through outreach and awareness activities including septic maintenance projects, lake water quality testing, river cleanups and guided canoe trips and trail walks. Our members include enthusiastic community members with many years of watershed management experience and expertise in GIS, cartography, water quality testing, biology, environmental compliance, land use planning and resource management.

SWEPS is recruiting a project coordinator who will implement the SWEPS Summer 2015 Adopt-a-Stream project which includes: collaborating with NS Adopt-a-Stream program staff and other stream restoration project groups to design and implement stream restoration activities; supervising two Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps (NSYCC) project support crew; and reporting to the SWEPS Project Liaison.

Skills and Qualifications:

Registered in or completion of a Bachelor’s degree / college diploma in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related field would be well suited for the position. A valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and vehicle is required to conduct project activities. 

The successful candidate must:
• be team oriented;
• demonstrate strong project management, organizational and problem solving skills;
• be comfortable working outdoors;
• be able to perform physically demanding work in and around water;
• demonstrate experience conducting group presentations and working with the general public, particularly private landowners.

Responsibilities:

• Stream Restoration Work:
• installing in-stream restoration structures;
• documenting and monitoring ecological health of streams; and
• removing garbage and woody debris;
• Assessment and monitoring:
• water quality monitoring;
• fish habitat assessment; and
• restoration planting;
• Community involvement:
• planning and implementing community engagement;
• conducting education about stream environments and protection;
• restoration planting and cleanup events; and
• engaging with various stakeholders, including landowners;
• Other:
• management of project funds, including record keeping and material purchasing;
• developing a work plan and weekly progress report; and
• completion of project report for Adopt-a-Stream and SWEPS.
