This short article points to a factor I'd never thought about - the design of modern cars which have wider front pillars, in some cases to accommodate airbags.  One suggested win-win solution is also intriguing in terms of public education:  encourage motorists to plan their routes to minimize left turns, as a way not only to reduce risk, but also to save time and gas.
