*The Harrison Lewis Coastal Discovery Centre Society (HLC)*

*Student researcher position 2015*

The researcher will:
• Conduct research in the Port Joli Basin area under a program determined
by the student and his/her mentor
• Collect and record data using the appropriate equipment, database,
spreadsheet, and other pertinent applications
• Produce and present a report on his/her research
• Assist in program administration and/or facilitating
• Work with a diverse group of people
• Communicate with program participants, potential donors, guests, board of
directors, and the general public
• Maintain or oversee maintenance of dining/lecture/accommodation areas
• Assist in walking path maintenance
• Oversee and participate in tasks relating to guests/participants in 
programs
• Participate in events promoting the HLC
• Work with staff and/or HLC board of directors to fulfill the mandate 
of the
HLC
• Other tasks as required


*Preferred Qualifications:*
• driver’s license
• ability to work unsupervised
• skilled at dealing with a diverse group of people
• interest in environmental stewardship
• skilled in using tools and equipment
• team player
• attention to detail
• any or all of first aid, WHMIS, and Occupational Health and Safety 
training
would be an asset.

The Society operates an educational retreat, (HLC), for the exploration and
appreciation of the natural history and rural heritage of Nova Scotia 
through
instruction, research, literature, and the arts. We provide a base for
university field classes, provide instruction, provide meeting space and
accommodations for people exploring, studying, and researching the flora
and fauna of the Port Joli Basin area, encompassing federal and provincial
parks, NCC owned lands, NS Nature Trust owned lands, one of the earliest
CWS bird sanctuaries, and provincial Crown lands. HLC brings people from
Canada, U.S.A., and Europe to the area for art and recreation, enhancing
their appreciation of the province and this region.
