About the Job

Environmental Monitors observe the environment and the impacts of human and industrial activities. Monitors are responsible for monitoring the activities of industry to ensure project terms and conditions are met. Environmental monitors communicate valuable information to stakeholders to work toward mitigating negative environmental impacts.

SEM Ltd. is looking for motivated individuals to fill potential upcoming contract positions in environmental monitoring throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. 

Job duties & Work environment

Duties may vary significantly from job to job, but the following list includes typical job duties one might encounter as an environmental monitor:

Reporting Duties:
• Prepare technical reports detailing monitoring activities.
• Communicate effectively with project team members.
• Prepare for fieldwork, including attending daily meetings to discuss upcoming work tasks.
• Daily reporting of environmental monitoring activities
• Communicate daily with other environment staff to identify emerging and on-going environmental issues
• Attend morning tailboards meetings and weekly safety meetings and provide environmental input as required

Field Duties:
• Physical demands include moderate lifting, walking/hiking, and variable weather.
• Work outdoors for a large portion of the day
• Record data and observations in an accurate and well-organized manner.
• Read maps and navigate variable terrain, including operating vehicles.
• Inspecting sites and recording data and observations
• Taking photographs of sites and construction projects
• Operating and maintaining environmental field equipment
• Collecting samples and specimens
• Providing advice to construction crews / Field Supervisors on avoiding environmental incidents/impacts during the planning and execution of work activities

Experience, Education & Training
• Post-secondary education relating to environmental or biological sciences
• Experience in working environmental or biological sciences
• Experience working in remote areas an asset
• Familiarity with environmental mitigation techniques an asset
