Position: Outdoor Summer Environmental Program Instructor
Work Status: Seasonal - June 26th, 2016 to August 26th, 2016
Organization: Halifax's Adventure Earth Centre
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Adventure Earth Centre has been in operation since 1981 and has engaged over 60,000 young people through our programs. We help people appreciate, understand, and care for themselves and the Earth through experiential outdoor and environmental education and youth development programs. Our programs and core values of community, learning, magic, safety, sustainability, and excellence, create a culture that provides safe programming, fun and exploration in the natural world, opportunities to make a difference, unforgettable adventures, personal discovery, the teaching of ecological wisdom, and the development of leadership skills.

Adventure Earth Centre Outdoor Environment Summer Program Instructors may be working in a day camp and/or residential camp setting. Camps include day camps for 7-9 year olds, day camps for 10-12 year olds, and residential camps for 10-16 year olds (Sunship Earth, Explorers, LEAD, and Eco-Partners).

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Learning the principles of Earth Education, maintaining the Adventure Earth Centre’s core values, familiarizing self with assigned programs, reading staff manuals, facilitating programs, understanding HRM policies and procedures;
• Attending all required training sessions and participating in staff meetings;
• Participating in check ins and debriefs each day, leading activities, establishing and maintaining group community standards, guidelines, and norms, supporting other leaders by role modelling positive behaviours, organizing equipment and supplies, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants, organizing outings;
• Supporting youth leaders in their development by including them in debriefs, explaining the day camp process, and watching for areas of success or improvement and communicating these to the Youth Leadership Coordinator;
• Using appropriate techniques of behaviour guidance and supporting persons with disabilities in programs (e.g. personal care, lifting procedures, adapting activities, developing individualized plans when needed, etc.);
• Additional responsibilities of a Residential Program Leader include: overseeing a cabin overnight and crew during the day; supervising nightly bed preparations; and maintaining the emotional and physical safety of a group of participants for week long periods. Staff with the appropriate certifications will lifeguard participants on a beachfront, teach basic canoeing skills, and/or may lead overnight canoe/camping trips.

Qualifications: Education and Experience
• Current certification in Emergency First Aid including Level C CPR valid through to August 26, 2016
• At least one season/summer of experience working or volunteering with children
• Previous leadership experience with outdoor and/or environmental education

Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities
• Should have an understanding of Healthy Child Development
• Current National Lifeguard Service certification an asset
• Canoeing/kayaking certification an asset
• Experience in designing outdoor environmental program curriculum an asset
• Previous experience working with persons with disabilities considered an asset
• Previous experience at a residential camp an asset.
• Experience in youth leadership facilitation an asset.
• Advanced First Aid an asset

Conditions of Employment:
• Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
• Applicants must be willing to attend all orientations/training sessions (dates to be determined)
• Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiring
• Staff assigned to work overnight camps are responsible for organizing their own transportation to and from camp

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check

Work Status: Seasonal - June 26th, 2016 to August 26th, 2016

Wage Range: $10.60 - $11.00 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay)

Hours of Work: Up to 40 hours per week. Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends. Day camp staff work 8:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday. Residential camp staff will be living and working onsite at the camp location fulltime during the dates of the programs, working hours as required to complete duties and responsibilities.

Work Location: Adventure Earth Centre, 68 Parkhill Road, Fleming Park, Halifax and/or Camp Mockingee, Windsor, NS
