Position: Conference Assistant for ACORN Annual Conference

Since 2000, ACORN has been the key organization for information on organic agriculture, eating organics, and connecting all the parts together in Atlantic Canada. From seed to farmer to consumer, ACORN works to bring the whole picture together making food choices healthier and more environmentally responsible. ACORN hosts many events, but the largest is our annual organic Conference and Trade Show, this year taking place from November 27-29 at the Best Western Glengarry in Truro, NS.
The ACORN Conference aims to gather representatives from the entire Atlantic Canadian organic agricultural community (and beyond) for a three dayevent of knowledge sharing, learning and networking, and boasts over 400 attendees, 40+ exhibitors, and 40+ workshops in four concurrent sessions each day.
Conference Assistant Job Description
The Conference Assistant will work closely with and report to ACORNs Conference Coordinator. This position will support coordination and logistics for all aspects of the conference. Specific tasks will include:
Overseeing event registration logistics, from preregistration to onsite registration desk;*
Supporting ACORNs Conference Coordinator with ACORNs organic trade show and sponsorship recruitment and followup;
Assisting ACORNs Conference Coordinator with speaker bookings and logistics;
Managing ACORNs volunteer coordination including recruiting and hiring a childcare coordinator;
Providing logistics support for communications such as ACORNs conference website and program development and distribution;
Assisting with future planning and coordination of the 2018 ACORN conference in Prince Edward Island;
Supporting outreach and promotional efforts for the ACORN Conference;
& more related to conference planning and execution.
*Please note that this will require the candidate to be available for additional hours the week prior to the conference and the week of the conference.
Skills & Qualifications
Friendly, approachable with experience in customer/member service considered an asset;
Event coordination experience;
Volunteer management experience;
Experience with not for profit organizations considered an asset;
Ability to communicate in both official languages (bilingualism strongly preferred);
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Effective team player who also works well independently;
Experience with Macintosh computers and programs considered an asset.
Job Details
37.5 hours/week with a biweekly salary, commensurate with experience.
Start date is Tuesday, August 1st, 2017 with contract ending February 28th, 2018. The successful candidate will work from ACORNs office in Sackville, NB.
This position is funded through the Agriculture and AgriFood Canadas (AAFC) Youth Green Jobs Initiative. To qualify, you must:
Be a Canadian post-secondary graduate;
Be 30 years or younger at the start of the internship
Not have participated in any other Youth Employment Strategy programs (ie. Career Focus);
Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
