Position: Senior Marine Campaign Coordinator (1-year maternity leave position)
Organization: Ecology Action Centre
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Ecology Action Centre is a member-based, environmental charity based in Nova Scotia. We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. We are grounded in community, and are a strong voice and watchdog for our environment. We work to catalyze change through policy advocacy, community development, and building awareness. We take a holistic approach to the environment and our economy to create a just and sustainable society.
The Ecology Action Centres marine team works locally, nationally and internationally towards protecting the marine ecosystem and maintaining sustainable fisheries, which support vibrant coastal communities. We are seeking an enthusiastic environmental campaigner with an interest in marine issues, who is looking for a dynamic and challenging job opportunity to make change in the worlds oceans.
This position is one of two project co-leads of a highly collaborative 7-person team. The job requires someone who is knowledgeable and passionate about marine conservation as well as an experienced team coordinator. The successful candidate will be a skilled campaigner with an interest in policy change work and the ability to think creatively and advocate for precautionary, science-based decision making. The Senior Campaign Coordinator is the lead on bluefin tuna, sharks and forage fish conservation campaigns and several national and international coalitions. The successful candidate will also be a skilled project manager, with demonstrated abilities in budget management, fundraising, and strategic partnership development. The position will support and be supported by the rest of project staff and will report to the EACs staff directors. The position with work regularly with the other Senior Marine Coordinator.
The Senior Marine Campaign Coordinator duties include:
Campaign management, including
Strategy development
Developing campaign strategy, particularly relating to large and small pelagic fisheries conservation
Pursuing outreach and collaboration opportunities
Researching fisheries and marine policy and integrating results into strategic coordination and planning
Communications
Communicating and developing outreach material
Acting as media spokesperson
Advocacy
Delivering on campaign goals and objectives, often in coordination with other project partners
Engaging at regional, national and international fisheries management fora and advocating EACs positions
Engaging in various national and international coalitions
Delivering presentations and public speaking at outreach events
Other
Participating in and supporting the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre
Working with the Marine Action Committee
Other duties as required
Project management, including
Working in co-coordination on team communication and coordination
Workplan development
Relationship building and networking
Budget oversight
Volunteer and staff management
Workshop and event organization
Proposal writing and fundraising
Reports to funders and supporters
Required skills and experience:
At least 3 years of experience working in ocean or environmental policy campaigns
3 + years of project management experience
Knowledge of national Canadian and international fisheries and ocean policy
Understanding of sustainable fisheries and sustainable seafood
Experience attending fisheries management meetings
Experience engaging with coalitions and working collaboratively with other ENGOs
Flexible and adaptable, ability to work in an ever changing environment
Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of partners - resource users, conservation colleagues, government decision makers, academics, community groups
Ability to synthesize and pick up new information quickly
Grant writing
Effective social media communication skills
Demonstrated leadership skills
Excellent written and oral skills
Strong public speaking, writing skills and project management skills
Desirable skills and experience:
Specific experience at regional fisheries management organizations and the United Nations
Specific knowledge of shark, bluefin tuna and forage fish conservation and management
Experience in a non-profit environment

Terms of Employment:
This position is one-year maternity leave replacement.
Start date: December 6, 2017
End Date: January 9, 2019
37.5 hours per week @ $23-26/hour based on experience. Four weeks paid vacation and a cost-shared benefits program.
Hours: Monday to Friday from 9AM to 5PM. Some evening and weekend work will be required. Some domestic and international travel required.
Location: Ecology Action Centre, 2705 Fern Lane, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
