Position: Senior Project Manager

On behalf of our client, Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources Inc. (CIER), we are recruiting for a Senior Project Manager to join their team. As a national First Nation directed environmental non-profit organization, CIERs mission is to work in partnership with Indigenous nations to support and build sustainable Indigenous communities and a healthy environment. This organization conducts research and provides training to build sustainable communities and protect lands and waters. CIER is very interested in people who wish to work towards reconciliation with Indigenous Nations and non-Indigenous allies.
Reporting to the Executive Director and the Manager Finance & Administration, the Senior Project Manager is responsible for managing various projects, which includes project development, implementation, and planning and facilitation of multi-sector and multi-disciplinary initiatives. The Senior Project Manager is primarily responsible for managing an extensive array of projects and participating, as required, in CIER organizational management responsibilities. The purpose of this position is to work with Indigenous governments, communities and peoples, and their allies, to build capacity in developing and successfully completing projects in accordance with CIERs thematic areas (i.e., water, youth, waste, climate change, biodiversity, Indigenous knowledge).
Key Accountabilities
Responsible for all stages of developing and delivering projects related to CIER's thematic areas (e.g. recent projects have been in the areas of natural resources, land use, environmental and sustainability planning, water governance and stewardship, communications, and other scientific/social science fields)
Develop and maintain collaborative initiatives and partnerships with Indigenous communities, government agencies, private sector companies, philanthropic and charitable organizations, non-profits and academic institutions
Responsible for client, funder and partnership liaison and relationship maintenance; including being apprised of and successful in accessing project funding opportunities
Perform project activities that include research; report writing and editing; financial reporting to meet funder requirements; developing and ensuring compliance with contracts for consultants; other administrative support as needed
Organize, facilitate and report on community and/or multi-stakeholder meetings and workshops including agenda setting, minute-taking, and preparing briefing documents
Consult with project staff to provide guidance; outline work plan, assign duties and responsibilities, and resolve problems
Manage budget and staff hours for tracking and analysis
Update communications on all media including social media, website, etc.
Participate in weekly CIER staff conference calls to update on project activities
Collaborate with the Executive Director and Manager Finance & Administration to ensure the overall health, effectiveness and stability of CIER
Skills & Qualifications
Preferably a Masters degree in environmental science, engineering, law, political science, Indigenous studies or related discipline; or equivalent combined education and experience
In-depth applied knowledge of at least one of CIER's thematic areas and a willingness to increase knowledge as required in other thematic areas
Minimum 5 years direct experience (outside of post-secondary education) in a cross-cultural setting and demonstrable skills in cross-cultural relations with the demonstrated ability to foster collaborative environments between diverse audiences
Minimum 5 years direct experience (outside of post-secondary education) in facilitation, specifically designing and implementing innovative workshops and other structured and semi-structured learning interventions
Minimum 5 years as a project management lead with responsibility for all stages of project development and implementation, including managing diverse teams, budgets, timelines, and reporting
Interest, willingness, self-management skills to work in a virtual office, with minimum direct in-person oversight
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to establish credibility with a multiplicity of parties
Knowledge of Indigenous governments, their numerous functions and structures, and experience navigating relationships, approval mechanisms, etc.
Understanding of current issues, challenges and opportunities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities
Strong political acumen, diplomacy, and discretion
Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, including with remote team members from partner organizations
Excellent written, presentation, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Experience in using social media and MS Office
Ability to travel extensively across Canada is absolutely required
