Position: Market Stand and Mobile Food Market Staff

Common Roots Urban Farm is a community farm. Our mission is to promote healthy lifestyles and landscapes through hands-on education about growing and eating healthy food.. There are three parts of the garden: the community garden, the market garden, and commons. The quarter acre market garden produces flowers and vegetables for sale through our social enterprise.

The Mobile Food Market brings fresh, high quality, affordable foods to neighbourhoods in Halifax with food access issues.

We are looking for a summer student to support our market stand on Common Roots Urban Farm on Wednesdays, and work with the Mobile Food Market on Fridays and Saturdays. We are looking for someone who is kind and reliable, willing to help out two hard-working projects with diverse participants.

Average 25 hours a week Tuesday to Friday (with 2 full Saturday’s during the placement)

$11.00/hr for 10 weeks. Begins June 26th to August 31st

Duties Include
• Manage on farm market stand including:
• Market set-up and take-down
• Engage with customers
• Ensure we have packaging and marketing materials available
• Keeping detailed records of production and sales
• Assist in harvest, packaging, sorting and delivery by bike
• Keep sales and harvest records up to date in GoogleDrive
• Assist with social media photographic and written content

Alternating Tuesday and Fridays will be spent supporting the Mobile Food Market project with a focus on;
• work with the MFM Coordinator and volunteers in preparing produce for Saturday's market (transporting, sorting, weighing/bagging, storing produce)

Two Saturday's during placement will be spent joining the Mobile Food Market on it's route and providing support for:
• transforming the Halifax transit bus into a mobile market - stalling shelving and display units
• loading, displaying and pricing produce
• traveling to the North End Halifax and Fairview market sites to provide overall support in running the markets(could include managing the check-out, bagging, engaging customers for feedback, restocking produce, etc.)
• supporting the take-down and cleaning process for the bus at the end of the day
• one Saturday will be July 1 (7:30am-3:30pm) while the other date is flexible

Required Skills and Experience 
• Motivated and energetic
• Organized and able to create new systems ie. checklists, spreadsheets
• Good writing and math skills
• Friendly and good with the public
• Able to work in a diverse team setting made up of staff and volunteers
• Able to work outside for many hours in various weather conditions
• Spreadsheet and GoogleDrive familiarity
