Position Title: Ambassadors/ Enviro Team members
Type: summer job / summer student position
Reporting to: Executive Director
Organization: Spring Garden Area Business Association
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Duration – 14 weeks. Position begins 22 May, 2018. Start date to be determined.

Salary – $12.00/hour

Hours – 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The Spring Garden Area Business Association (SGABA) is a member-based, non-profit organization representing the interests of the many property owners, merchants and service providers in the Spring Garden area. Working with the various levels of government and other key stakeholders, the Association strives to help make the Spring Garden area a great place to live, shop, work and play.

The SGABA is currently looking for an energetic, outgoing summer student to fill the role of Ambassador/Enviro Team Member.

Working with the staff of the Spring Garden Area Business Association and reporting to the Executive Director, the Ambassador/Enviro Team Member will create and maintain a welcoming, clean and safe environment for residents, visitors, and tourists of the Halifax Regional Municipality.

As an Ambassador of the SGABA, you will maintain a visible and approachable presence on the street and be available to answer any questions from tourists and other members of the public. You will share information on area restaurants, businesses, attractions and activities to residents and visitors in a friendly, helpful fashion. You will be proactive in engaging with member businesses in order to effectively promote them to the public, and to address any concerns. While conducting daily duties, the Ambassador/Enviro Team Member will at all times project a positive image of the Spring Garden area.

The majority of the Ambassador/Enviro Team Member’s time will be spent outside. Some weekend work will be required.

Responsibilities:
• Offer assistance and provide information about the Spring Garden Area to residents, visitors and tourists to enhance their experience;
• Sweep up all forms of litter and garbage on sidewalks, curbs and gutters throughout the area;
• Assist with the coordination and execution of all summer events organized by the SGABA. This includes, but is not limited to, the Children’s Festival;
• Administer a survey face-to-face with people on Spring Garden Road and assist in data collection and compilation;
• Maintain a promotional presence at areas of high visibility, particularly during high-traffic events and activities held in the area (i.e.: events in Victoria Park, Public Gardens, etc);
• Assess situations, identify problems, and implement solutions;
• Report to the Executive Director any damaged or worn-looking banners, planter boxes, benches, bike racks, litter bins, mailboxes, buildings, and any other irregularities on the streets – burned out lights, cracks in sidewalks, loose bricks, broken trees, graffiti;
• Paint street amenities such as bike racks, street benches and sign posts;
• Daily watering, weeding, and maintenance of flower planters and beds;
• Assist with the distribution of SGABA newsletters and other SGABA related information;
• Assist with general office administration as needed;
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications:
• Must be registered as a full-time post secondary student during the preceding academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year;
• Exceptional interpersonal, communication and organizational skills as well as a keen eye for detail;
• Must be capable of handling a physically demanding workload, including lifting and pulling;
• Able to organize job tasks efficiently, work with minimal supervision and work well independently,
• Experience in event coordination or promotions an asset but not essential;
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment;
• Familiarity of the businesses and attractions in the Spring Garden area.
