Position: Executive Director (posting version, Dec 19, 2019)
Organization: Trout River Environment Committee (TREC)
Location: Stanley River and Hope River Watersheds, Prince Edward Island

Term: Eight Month Term (Pending Organization Funding), from April through November with a with potential two month mid-winter term for report, funding application, planning work period.

General Description: Directing, Organizing and Coordinating the daily operations of TREC.

General Description of the Responsibility of TREC and the Geographic Area it Serves:The Trout River Environmental Committee is a community-based, recognized charity based organization working in the Stanley River and Hope River watersheds. Every year, TREC undertakes environmental restoration work in these watersheds to restore the health of local ecosystems and support fish and wildlife populations. TREC also offers community workshops and events where local residents can learn about our environment and how to protect it. Our goal is to help preserve and protect the environment that supports all of us.

TREC also develops, maintains and operates the Trout River park and Devil’s Punchbowl park for community recreation and nature appreciation.

Accountability: The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of the Trout River Environment Committee (TREC) and all work programsmust be approved by the Board, including: project development,funding applications and reports to funding agencies; management of staff; field work planning & delivery; financial management; liaison with landowners and outside agencies; data collection and analysis; and public relations. Must observe provincial safety regulations and TREC Policies and Procedures document, Version 3.0, June 23, 2019.

Reporting to the TREC President (Chair) and Board of Directors.

Duties:

Planning (30%)
• Coordinate all aspects of watershed planning for restoration and other work as directed by the Board
• Make applications for funding to government and other agencies, and complete required reports
• Maintain an up-to-date list of all projects and assist the Board to prioritize them

Field Operations (25% )
• Deliver results based on goals, objectives and strategies through management of all field operations
• Provide broad over-sight of in-stream and on-the-ground activities such as fish habitat enhancement, tree planting, and removal of debris and garbage from waterways and riparian areas
• Supervise and complete all prescribed data collection, analysis and reporting activities, forsuch parameters asnitrate, turbidity, water temperature and flows
• Liaise with technical experts on watershed restoration activities as required
• Oversee surveys on tree, shrub and plant health and diversity in the watershed
• Record information necessary for final reporting: taking before and after photos, recording number and coordinates for built structures (brush mats, flow deflectors, etc.), length of stream worked on, etc.
• Summarize and consolidate all survey and data-collection activities
• Manage all equipment, including purchasing, inventory, use, maintenance and storage
• Organize and coordinate all contract work with heavy equipment operators and/or construction companies
• During field work period the watershed Directormay be required to be is expected to be in the field up to 3 days each week.
• Possibility of working overtime as “time in lieu” as needed during field season

Administrative Management (25%) 
• Prepare monthly and annual reports as required by the Board and funding agencies
• Maintain appropriate financial, personnel and inventory records
• Manage staff in accordance with applicable provincial and federal legislation
• Establish performance standards, assign duties for the field crew(s); supervise fields crews as required (this is a shared responsibility with the Field Crew Supervisor )
• Enforce safety rules in use of equipment and in all field operations
• Abide by TREC,Policies and Procedures, Version 3.0 June 23, 2019
• Participate in the recruitment and hiring of crew members as required
• Prepare for and attend Board and other public meetings, as required

Communications (20%) 
• Communicate TREC activities to watershed residentsthroughpreparation of newsletters, community posters, and media releases, oversee social media usepromotion
• Liaise with community residents and landowners tobuild landowner partnerships andacquire landowner permission for access to streams and adjoining land
• Work with landowners and residents to adoptpromoteactivities that will enhanceprotection of the local environment
• Work with the TREC Board and committee members to organize public meetings and educational events

Qualifications:

Qualifications - Mandatory 
• Must have sciencebiologybackground, preferablyenvironmental sciences orecologyor wildlife biology
• Must have some field experience,
• Supervisory experinceexperiencerolein team environment experience required
• Must have excellent writing skills, familiarity working with Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Must be comfortable speaking in public
• Ability to handle physically demanding tasks such as heavy lifting and walking for extended periods in various outdoor habitats and conditions
• Must have valid driver’s license
• First Aid/CPRcertification and , ssecurity clearance may be requiredconditions of employment

Assets
• Experience in the areas of project coordination, public relations, technical writing, budgeting
• Project/Program financial operations and planning experience
• Experience with funding/grant applications
• Watershed restoration experience
• Pproven ability to manage staff work with Board in a collaborative style
• Previous staffing experience an asset
• Stakeholder collaboration and communication experience
• Time management skills; problem-solving, thinking outside the box, and ability to adapt plans at short notice
• Working knowledgeMust be familiarwith GPSsystemsand software
• Chainsaw Safety Certification and First Aid certification preferred
• Electrofishing Certification

Salary: This is an hourly rated position for a specified term(s). Rate of pay is dependent on qualifications and would range from ($18 to $22) per hour.

Evaluation: The Coordinator’s performance is evaluated annually by the Board and is based on the degree of completion of duties and responsibilities as outlined above.

Removal from position: The Coordinator’s employment may be terminated without cause during the six-month probation period, and may be terminated with cause in accordance with the provisions of the Employment Standards Act.
