Job Title: Common Roots Urban Farm Move Coordinator
Reports to: Common Roots Coordinator, Transition Team Lead
Key Relationships: Common Roots Urban Farm (CRUF) Core Staff
Organization: Common Roots Urban Farm
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Eligibility: current EI claim or past 60 months / JCP (see below)
Position Summary:
Common Roots Urban Farm is a hybrid garden currently located in downtown Halifax at the corner of Bell Rd and Robie St. For seven years it has been a vibrant community project, growing food in the heart of the city. In April 2019 the farm needs to relocate. We are looking for an organized, enthusiastic and independent worker to support the logistics of the move, including planning the move, sourcing in-kind labour and equipment, communication, and volunteer coordination. The position would also assist with the evaluation of several secondary sites which would be used for community gardens and individual garden boxes. We want this move to build on the strength of the community we have grown over the past seven years, and for a diverse group of people, businesses and community players to be part of building Common Roots 2.0.
Number of hours per week: Jan 28 October 25, 37.5 hrs/wk
Wage: JCP rate
Duties and responsibilities:
1. Plan the move:
a. Work with current CRUF staff to schedule the move
b. Determine what needs to be moved where and when
c. Communicate with hospital and new site re: details around the physical move
2. Source in-kind labour and equipment:
a. Based on schedule and needs, use CRUFs contact list to source support for moving infrastructure
3. Communications:
a. Communicate with volunteers, people offering in-kind equipment and labour, land owners and CRUF staff, keeping everyone updated about schedules and deadlines for move.
b. Create social media content to update community about process as per communications plan
c. Thank people for their work
4. Volunteer Coordination:
a. Coordinate work parties, including meals, possible entertainment, and all other needs
5. Using methodologies developed form the initial move, work with CRUF staff to locate and evaluate secondary sites for community and individual garden boxes.
Skills/Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this job will:
Have strong organizational and project management skills, including demonstrated excel/google sheets proficiency
Be very comfortable reaching out to people via phone and email
Have experience working with and coordinating diverse groups of people
Work well within time constraints
Have an interest in local food and community
This opportunity is funded through a Job Creation Partnership with the Department of Labour and Advanced Education. To be eligible you must meet one of the following:
have a current Employment Insurance (EI) claim
have had an EI claim that ended within the last 60 months
have been employed with gross insurable earnings of $2000 or higher annually, in at least 5 of the last 10 years
