Position: Indigenous Program Manager (Full Time through 2021)
Organization: Outward Bound Canada
Immediate Supervisor: Director of Learning and Adventure
Location: OBC National HQ in Toronto, ON. This position could also work from one of our regional bases in Vancouver, BC, Canmore, Alberta, or St John, NB.
Start date: September 15, 2019

ABOUT THE POSITION
The Indigenous Program Manager will oversee program development and implementation of Outward Bound Canadas National Indigenous Leadership program strategy. This includes cultivating partnerships and engaging Canadian Indigenous communities across Canada, recruiting participants and instructional staff and the development of culturally relevant programming within the OBC curricula. This is an extraordinary opportunity for someone who is highly motivated and compassionate with a profound commitment to supporting the development aspirations of Indigenous peoples across Canada. The Indigenous Program Manager will be the public face and ambassador for this program.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Build and maintain effective relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations and partners across Canada.
Develop meaningful and culturally relevant program curriculum and training materials.
Support Regional Directors in the hiring and support of Indigenous instructors.
Provide cultural competency advice to Regional Directors as they design and deliver Indigenous and cross-cultural programs.
Oversee culturally relevant training for instructors and team members working with Indigenous students.
Recruit students and provide support to their families and communities throughout the admissions process.
Recruit and engage program volunteers, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers to ensure effective and respectful program design and delivery.
Develop and maintain relationships with delivery partners, key clients, land managers and other stakeholders as necessary to ensure high quality program delivery. 1 This position is generously funded by the Slaight Foundation through December, 2021.
Support the Philanthropy Department in identifying and engaging new funding partners and the ongoing stewardship of these partners and donors.
Work with the other departments within the organization to oversee and ensure communications and outreach related to the National Indigenous Leadership Program; including student recruitment, development of marketing and communication tools, and managing public and media relations.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Strong working knowledge of the outdoor and experiential/adventure industry along with a deep understanding of and commitment to the Outward Bound philosophy and pedagogy.
Extensive experience working with Indigenous populations and a broad familiarity with Indigenous cultural and community perspectives across Canada. The successful applicant will have a broad range of existing Indigenous community connections and relationships.
Strong background working with youth.
Background in social work &/or education - specifically in working with Indigenous Communities is an asset.
Have an understanding of the range of issues facing Indigenous youth across Canada.
Detail oriented: excellent planning, organizational, communication, and system building skills.
Have excellent interpersonal and people management skills.
Solution-focused; able to take responsibility and work unsupervised.
Technologically savvy with a high level of computer competency; experience with MS Office programs (particularly Word, PowerPoint and Excel), Google Suites, Database/CRMs (Salesforce is an asset).
Wilderness First Aid/Advanced Wilderness First Aid (+80hrs) certification & CPR-C (asset).
Class 5 Drivers License required. Class 4 Drivers License is an asset.
Current teaching certificate (asset).
Must be fluent in English: fluency in an Indigenous language is an asset.
Must obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector check prior to employment.
This position will require a flexible work schedule and will require travel from time to time to our program regions in BC, Rocky Mountains, Northern Ontario and New Brunswick.
