Position: Young Naturalists Club Coordinator
Organization: Young Naturalists Club
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Young Naturalists Club (YNC) of Nova Scotia is a registered charity that has been operating successfully in Halifax for 11 years. It is a fun nature club for families and kids that educates members about local natural history through interactive, immersive experiences in local wild areas. The Club tries to instill a fascination for nature in its members, and enables mentors with natural history knowledge to pass on their skills and experiences to the next generation of naturalists through annual events and monthly field trips from September to June.
The YNC Coordinator will be responsible for administration and promotion of the YNC, as well as securing financial resources and designing and delivering programming to its members. The ideal candidate will have a passion for getting kids into nature, will be very self-motivated, be an excellent networker, have strong communication skills and be willing to learn a wide variety of skills. We are seeking a Coordinator who can help the board define a future path for the organization that is focused and self-sustaining.
Qualifications:
Program coordination experience, including experience in outreach and communications, budgeting and accounting, report writing, and grant writing.
Undergraduate degree in environmental education, biological sciences, education, or related field.
Experience in, or strong interest in, nature and/or science interpretation and experience working with youth.
Good motivator of youth and adults the YNC Coordinator must inspire and support volunteers and volunteer leaders in communities.
Experience in fundraising and event management an asset.
Responsibilities:
Marketing and promoting the YNC
Membership registration
Managing the YNC website, email, and communications
Writing grant proposals, fundraising and forging corporate funding partnerships
Budgeting and accounting for organization
Engaging local naturalists in sharing their knowledge at YNC field trips and events
Working with partner organizations at the local, provincial, and national levels
Aiding new chapters with promoting events, finding guest speakers, managing funds, and finding resources
Liaising with the YNC board of directors and/or past YNC Coordinator
Attending meetings as a YNC representative, such as the NSEN environmental education caucus and Nature Nova Scotia board
Designing and delivering programming for YNC programs including Nature Guardians and Youth Program at annual Celebration of Nature
Researching nature education resources
Showcasing local outdoor and/or environmental education opportunities to YNC members
Salary, benefits, and working conditions:
$19/hour for 20-30 hours/week (depending on funding). This is a contract position (no E.I. deductions, no health benefits).
Potential to receive some funding through Government of NS START program (for Nova Scotians seeking work experience) https://novascotia.ca/employmentnovascotia/programs/start.asp
Position starts in May with May 13, 2019 as the latest potential start date. Contract runs until December 31, 2019, with the intention to extend the contract if funding is in place.
8 days paid vacation, in addition to statutory holidays.
Must be willing to travel within the province, and to work occasionally on weekends.
Currently, there is no office space for this position. The selected candidate would have to work from a home office, or find suitable office space. The position is based in Halifax.
The selected candidate would work under the guidance of the board of directors, and the past YNC Coordinator. The past YNC Coordinator is locally available to help with the transition to a new Coordinator.
