Position: Wetlands and Water Officer
Organization: Ecology Action Centre
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

We are seeking to hire a Wetlands and Water Officer, who will support two of our teams. Our Wilderness Team who works to conserve terrestrial biodiversity in Nova Scotia; and our Coastal Team who works to protect our coastal ecosystems, promote and support coastal climate change adaptation.

ABOUT YOU

You are passionate about nature conservation on land, in freshwater, and on the coast. You are willing to dive deeply into water and wetland policy and regulations in order to contribute to advocacy campaigns on these subjects. Being very organized and having strong priority setting skills will allow you to effectively support individuals across different teams.

YOUR FOCUS

As the Wetlands and Water Officer you will contribute to the efforts of our Wilderness and Coastal Teams. Your work will involve conducting research for our campaigns and assisting with writing, strategizing, communicating, planning meetings and events. Our areas of focus are topics related to freshwater and wetlands, including: impacts of mining on water, wildlife, and communities; stormwater management; wetland protection; and the benefits of protected areas.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING
• At least 1-2 years of experience conducting research, reviewing literature and writing reports, ideally related to water
• Strong communications skills, both oral and written
• A friendly, patient and strategic approach to working with partners, allies, and adversaries
• Proven ability to analyze government policies and gather data
• An awareness of the importance of environmental campaigns
• Experience assisting with event planning and coordinating activities
• Support writing grant proposals
• Practical experience in facilitation, stakeholder consultation and public education
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively allocate your time to complete important productive tasks
• Contribute to a collaborative team environment
• Research and writing of both internal and external communications including press releases, web content and social media posts.
• Project administration skills to assist funder reporting, proposal and report writing, and donor relationship stewardship.
• Willingness to participate in and support the overall work of the Ecology Action Centre, including but not limited to community queries, engagement organizing, and promoting our overall impact.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
• Start date: January 2021
• 37.5 hours/week at $20.00 - $23.00 per hour based on experience
• 1-year contract with the possibility of extension
• Cost-shared benefits plan and 4 weeks paid vacation per year
• Work can be completed in our office space or done remotely with periodic work in our office space.
• The position requires occasional evening and weekend work and involves limited travel.
