About the Position

The Loaded Ladle is looking for an individual to guide volunteers in the kitchen, assist with cooking and run the servings at the Studley campus kitchen located inside the Dalhousie Student Union Building. This individual will be a core part of our kitchen staff, working very closely with the Kitchen Coordinator. In the mornings they will help to prepare foods as directed by the Kitchen Coordinator. They will supervise the servings from 12-2pm, ensuring that food safety standards are met. Food Safety training will be provided. Finally, they will finish the cleaning of the kitchen each day. If there are volunteers present, this individual will prioritize helping the volunteers to feel welcomed and support them with the appropriate guidance. They will also help volunteers who contact them via e-mail through an orientation process, as well as maintaining a record of volunteer contact info and attendance.

The ideal candidate is encouraging, patient, and understanding of differences; prepared to take on a leadership role (with support and training from the rest of the staff and Board); and has some cooking competency (ie. can make a soup or bake some cookies on their own, using a recipe).

Employment Equity:

The Loaded Ladle recognizes that with regards to people’s experiences and job qualifications, a ‘level playing field’ does not currently exist because of the structural injustices of our society. We recognize that the public face of the broader food justice movement in North America is predominantly white and cis-gendered. We also recognize that the people most affected in the struggle for food sovereignty are people from historically marginalized groups. For these reasons, The Loaded Ladle believes that employment equity is a necessary practice to challenge some of these injustices. The Loaded Ladle sees Employment Equity as a pro-active measure to prioritize hiring people from historically marginalized groups. In order to be considered for Employment Equity, we strongly encourage people to self-identify in their cover letter.

About the Loaded Ladle:

The Loaded Ladle Halifax Cooperative is a non-profit co-op and a levied Society of the Dalhousie and King’s Students Unions. Our programming creates and sustains a dialogue in the Halifax community about food sovereignty, food justice, and food security with a critical perspective toward prevailing systems of injustice. During the school year, we serve plant-based meals four days per week on the Dalhousie University campus. Throughout the year, we provide servings in solidarity with others in our community.

How to Apply:
