Organization: Whale Camp
Location: Grand Manan, New Brunswick (includes housing and food)

The Whale Camp at the Fundy Marine Science Institute is dedicated to providing marine biology experiential educational programs and facilities for learning about the dynamic marine ecology of the Bay of Fundy as well as the coastal, terrestrial and human ecologies of Grand Manan Island. Our goal is to use hands-on, discovery-oriented marine science activities to increase awareness and understanding of these living systems and by extension the living systems of our oceans and planet.

We seek a highly qualified and specialized individual to fill a site director position at our residential science, nature, adventure summer camp and adult education programs. Our programs include whale watching trips, kayaking, and general observation of whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, puffins, eagles, and a wide variety of seabirds. Our activities and lessons focus largely on the intertidal zones and the dynamic marine and terrestrial ecosystems of the Bay of Fundy. We also offer a college credit program to students wishing to deepen their knowledge and skills in marine science. We also design and deliver programs for adult groups. The site director would be responsible for overseeing all activities taking place on the campus and the supervision of camp program director, logistics coordinator, and kitchen managers who plan all summer programming for children and adults. The site director oversees activities and campus policies, and it is essential that the candidate has a backgr
 ound in education and can train staff in using the campus as an outdoor classroom. Previous experience with similar programs is beneficial and preferred.

Requirements: 

This position is a management role requiring significant experience in camp or residential site management, demonstrated leadership skills, and knowledge of educational pedagogy. This position is responsible for sharing the vision of camp with the program director, logistics coordinator, and kitchen manager. Responsibilities include expertise to train staff in field teaching strategies, natural science concepts, and campus safety and emergency procedure. The candidate must have at least three years of experience teaching science in informal settings and using a variety of teaching techniques and confidence to train staff in content and pedagogy. At least two years of management experience is required, including some residential camp management experience.

Applicants must be flexible, patient, have a positive attitude, and sense of humor. Most time will be spent working in the office overseeing site operations of logistics coordinator, program director, kitchen staff, and teaching staff. Applicants must have strong organizational background, computer skills, enthusiasm for creating positive environments for youth and adult learning in an outdoor setting, ability to motivate others, demonstrated ability to facilitate group dynamics and manage staff in an outdoor camp environment. CPR / First Aid certification required. Additional wilderness emergency training preferred.

Professional Experience: 
• Two years previous management experience required, including some residential camp management experience.
• At least two years of experience developing and managing budgets, marketing and advertising
• At least two years teaching experience in informal setting (outside of classroom) for children and adults.

Education: 
• Bachelor's degree or major in a natural science field, environment, or education leadership required.
• Master’s degree in education, natural sciences, or leadership/management highly preferred.

Responsibilities:

Major responsibilities are directing and overseeing all aspects of campus coordination and programming - including but not limited to: 
• Manage/supervise program and logistics coordinators, teaching staff, and kitchen staff in a small, dynamic work environment
• With program director, recruit and hire teaching and kitchen staff
• With program director, train new and returning environmental science instructors and outdoor recreation and dorm instructors in camp procedures, content knowledge, and teaching strategies.
• Implement Whale Camp policies and procedures, modify as needed
• Be a positive role model and mentor for staff and campers
• Maintain and display a positive and encouraging attitude at all times
• Inform schedule for all daily and evening programs, including daily staff scheduling and days off
• Oversee and inform logistics coordinator in collecting registration and payments for programs
• Assure that all medical, dietary restrictions, and housing needs are met for participants
• Oversee coordination of programs including teaching groups, medical lists, housing needs, and expectations for contractors.
• Prepare travel and transportation days when needed
• Facilitate and lead weekly staff meetings along with logistics coordinator and program director
• Mediate staff or camper interpersonal or behavioral issues as needed
• Oversee logistics coordinator communication and program director with parents regarding logistics, payments, and any camper issues
• Develop and practice campus emergency and safety plans; provide first aid for injuries and illnesses as needed
• Order supplies and equipment for the camp as needed
• Prepare and manage operating budget

Term of Employment: June 10 - August 31, 2020

Language of Work: English

Compensation
• Pay: $30-$42 per hour depending on experience; 30 hours per week
• Housing and food provided for full work period
• A few whale watching trips, puffin trips and kayaking excursions if schedules permit.
