Position: Ghost Gear Project Field Technician
Organization: Coastal Action
Location: Mahone Bay, near Bridgewater, Nova Scotia
Salary: $18.00/hour + 4% vacation pay for 35 hours/week
Status: Thirteen (13) month full-time position beginning as soon as possible, ending September 30, 2022 (end date is negotiable).
Coastal Action is a charitable organization established in December 1993 that addresses environmental concerns on Nova Scotias South Shore. On behalf of Coastal Action, we are looking for an experienced Field Technician to join our Coastal & Marine Team for a thirteen-month contract. The position will be based at our Mahone Bay offices and is considered full-time.
Reporting to the Coastal & Marine Team Lead, and directly supervised by the Coastal & Marine Project Coordinator, the Ghost Gear Project Field Technician will support coordinating retrieval and disposal of abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear in the Collaborative Remediation of Abandoned, Lost, and Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) in Southwest Nova Scotia project.
What is ghost gear?
Abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), commonly referred to as ghost gear, makes up a large portion of all marine debris. It causes significant negative environmental, economic, and social impacts including habitat degradation, indiscriminate fishing and entanglements, decreased catches, at-sea safety hazards, and vessel damage. ALDFG is generated by unfavorable environmental conditions (like storms and bottom type), gear conflicts among fishers and other industries, poor gear condition, and inappropriate disposal at-sea. Losses can be accidental, fishers are not always at fault, as the marine environment is shared with other industries.
Project Description
The Collaborative Remediation of Abandoned, Lost, and Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) in Southwest Nova Scotia project, funded through Fisheries and Oceans Canadas Sustainable Fisheries Solutions and Retrieval Support Contribution Program, will work collaboratively with industry, academia, and government to prevent, reduce, and assess impacts of ALDFG on the South Shore of Nova Scotia (LFAs 33, 34, and 35 Nova Scotia only) from July 2020 to March 2022. The project will implement waste management systems for responsible disposal of end-of-life gear, retrieving ALDFG from targeted areas, and conducting an impact assessment of ALDFG during retrieval, with ongoing communication campaigns throughout the project.
The Ghost Gear Project Field Technician will work directly with the Coastal & Marine Project Coordinator to coordinate ALDFG disposal and retrieval in Southwest Nova Scotia.
Your Opportunity:
Plan and implement a regional ALDFG project in Nova Scotia in partnership with marine debris researchers, non-governmental organizations, and the fishing industry
Assist in the assessment of existing waste management options for ALDFG disposal
Create a comprehensive guide for waste management options to support the fishing industry in responsible disposal of ALDFG
Support installing rope disposal bins at select wharves across the region and facilitate their management
Record and collect ALDFG data during retrieval days in Halifax, Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne, and Yarmouth Counties (LFAs 33 and 34) to remediate the issue of ALDFG
Assist in the amalgamation and assessment of data collected in the form of written report(s)
Your Experience(s) and Education:
Knowledge of marine debris, ALDFG, and the fishing industry in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada
Previous experience with onboard vessel and/or at-sea monitoring experience
Previous experience in research and scientific data collection and analysis
University education from a background relevant to environmental science/studies and/or resource and marine management (completed)
Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication
Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Excel
First Aid Training: Current certification in Standard First Aid + CPR Level A (or equivalent) by the start date of the contract
Marine First Aid and Systems Survival training is an asset
Previous experience working directly with the fishing industry is an asset
Screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a criminal records check (to be completed following offer of employment)
A valid drivers license and access to a vehicle
How we define success for your role:
As an experienced Ghost Gear Project Field Technician, you enjoy working both independently and in a team environment, as well as collaborating with partners from a variety of backgrounds (e.g., fishers, academics, and other environmental non-governmental organizations). You are a strong communicator and experienced in field work, proficient in completing tasks from start to finish. You enjoy working outdoors in varied weather conditions and have experience working on and around the ocean. You have a passion for ocean conservation, marine debris prevention, and an appreciation for nature with a strong desire to share that with others.
Coastal Action is a driven team dedicated to providing education, research, and environmental services to Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. If you have what it takes to join our team, we would like to hear from you.
Resumes and accompanying cover letters identifying how you can contribute to Coastal Actions success as Ghost Gear Project Field Technician can be sent to alexa at coastalaction.org .
Coastal Action is an equal opportunity employer. We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
